Hi,
I recently purchased an HP laptop (model: HP 15-fc0076nl). I am considering installing Linux instead of the preinstalled Windows operating system.

Before I make any changes, I would like to confirm HP’s official policy regarding warranty in this situation.

Specifically, I want to know:

  1. Does installing Linux or changing the operating system affect the hardware warranty?

  2. Will HP still provide hardware support (for issues such as battery, SSD, display, keyboard, motherboard, etc.) even if the device is running Linux?

  3. If needed for service, is it acceptable to simply reinstall Windows before sending the device in?

I am not asking for software support for Linux — only clarification about whether the hardware warranty remains valid after an OS change.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi:

This is a peer to peer forum and as such, we don't work for or represent HP and cannot respond officially on their behalf regarding warranty issues.

However, what we know is this:

If your notebook ever needs warranty service, you will need to return the PC to its original factory hardware & software configuration before sending it in for warranty work.

What I recommend you do before installing Linux would be to use the HP cloud recovery tool to create a bootable USB recovery drive that will return the PC's drive to its 'out of the box' condition.

Here is an info link for how to use the utility.  You will need a 32 GB USB flash drive for this.

You can download the software from the Microsoft Store.
