HP ENVY Laptop 13-ba1000 (1J6N4AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello. I wanted to ask if there is any difference between charging with the charger provided with the laptop or through USB-C. I've always believed that USB-C didn't support passthrough charging on laptops, and therefore if I use my laptop while charging it has always been through the original charger. I only charge with USB-C when the laptop is off.
Am I doing it right?
Or does this laptop support usb-c bypass charging which would make it the same as charging through the original charger?

Hi @DTK3,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your laptop!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

The HP Envy 13-ba1002sf laptop does support charging through USB-C. To clarify the concepts and provide accurate recommendations, let's delve into passthrough charging and using different charging methods:

USB-C Charging

Passthrough Charging (Bypass Charging): Bypass charging commonly refers to the ability of a laptop to run directly on AC power while reducing the load on the battery or preserving the battery life. When a laptop supports bypass charging through USB-C, it means that it can operate using power supplied via the USB-C port without necessarily charging the battery or putting strain on it.

Compatibility:

  • The HP Envy 13-ba1002sf supports charging via USB-C. This allows users to charge the laptop using a USB-C power adapter compatible with Power Delivery (PD).
  • Charging via USB-C typically works both when the laptop is turned on and off.

Original Charger vs. USB-C Charger

Original Charger:

  • The original charger supplied with the laptop is generally designed to provide optimized power management and efficient charging specific to your laptop model.
  • This can include bypass charging functionality where the laptop can run directly off the adapter power to ensure the battery is not constantly charging when already full.

USB-C Charger:

  • Using a USB-C charger also allows charging the laptop, but the effectiveness depends on the charger’s wattage and compatibility.
  • Ensure that the USB-C charger supports the necessary power output, ideally 45W or higher for this model to provide sufficient charging when the laptop is in use.

Recommendations:

While Using the Laptop (On):

  • Original Charger: Typically recommended as it might offer better power distribution management, including bypass charging capabilities.
  • USB-C Charger: Can be used while the laptop is on, provided it supports USB Power Delivery (PD). Ensure it is of adequate wattage (preferably 45W or higher).

While Laptop is Off:

  • Charging with USB-C when the laptop is off is fine and will efficiently charge the battery.

Ensuring you are using high-quality and compatible chargers will help maintain optimal performance and battery health for your HP Envy 13-ba1002sf laptop.

I hope this helps.
