Hi there,

I'm trying to connect a second monitor using VGA via an USB-C Dongle. However, my second monitor is blank. My computer doesn't register that a monitor is connected.

I know that my USB-C Port has DisplayPort 1.2, but I'm wondering, is that enough to allow for video transmission from my USB-C Port? Does my USB-C Port support Alternate Mode, or able to transmit video?

Thanks!

Eric

Hello AppleiPad556,

The HP ENVY x360 - 15-bq108ca uses a USB 3.1 Type-C™ Gen 1 (Data Transfer up to 5 Gb/s, DP1.2, HP Sleep and Charge) and should support video (alternate mode). I know for a fact that my computer with this exact same port can output displays.

Please post back with any further inquiries, if any.

Regards,

Eddy

Hi Eddy,

Thanks for the reply!

For your port, can you output to a VGA port? Which dongle do you use?

Did you need to update your USB-C Port, and do you by any chance know how to?

Thanks!

Hello AppleiPad556,

I haven't tried VGA with this port but it doesn't make sense that it doesn't work.

I suspect that the adapter is not trustworthy and therefore I will make a couple of recommendations for you:

HP USB-C to VGA adapter: https://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-usb-c-to-vga-display-adapter

Highly rated Amazon USB-C to VGA adapter: https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-USB-3-1-Type-C-Adapter/dp/B01M7PL2TA

Also just want to remind you that VGA isn't recommended because it doesn't transfer audio.

The only thing I can think of in terms of software is a BIOS update: http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp85001-85500/sp85085.exe

Hope this answers your question,

Eddy

Hello AppleiPad556,

I also have the same question and I have the same 2in1 hp laptop model.

I purchased 2 monitors that support HDMI and VGA.  I have not yet hooked them up but first want to know if this laptop supports dual screens.

If you got this to work can you please share your setup?

Much appreciated,

Bksch

Actually my model is slightly different (15-Bp023ca) but has the same spec for the USB - C port...

Hi there!

If we do have the same port, then yes, the computer can output to displays.

You will need to make sure you get a good dongle. I got a dongle from Amazon that had all the ports I ever needed, but it didn't work (maybe it's because I've never heard of the brand before, IDK)

If you're not too picky with what ports you need for your laptop, then choose a dongle with a manufacturer you know. Otherwise, buy from a place that has free returns. That way, you can always return it if it doesn't work 😉

I have the Dell USB-C to HDMI/VGA/Ethernet/USB 3.0 (https://www.dell.com/en-ca/shop/dell-adapter-usb-c-to-hdmi-vga-ethernet-usb-30-da200/apd/470-abqn/pc...), and it works great on my laptop, to the extent that the HDMI port on the dongle can only output up to 1920x1080 (due to limited Displayport capabilities). If you have an embedded HDMI port, then it really isn't a big deal.

Hope this helps! Sorry I haven't been active on the fourms for quite some time.
