I have the pavilion gaming 15 laptop with the i5-8300h and 1050ti. There is a usb c port on the right side and I was wondering if I could purchase a thunderbolt hub thingy for it.

Is there a thunderbolt icon near or above any of the USB-C ports?
If there is not, then it is not a Thunderbolt port and a Thunderbolt dock is not compatible with your notebook'
It would be helpful if you provided the complete product number or the complete product name.
While logged in, use the Fn+Esc keystroke. That should open a window that provides the information.
Do not post the serial number in the thread. That is information you should keep to yourself, unless asked by an official HP representative to provide it.

Have you taken a look for the thunderbolt icon?
It looks like a lightning bolt (aka thunderbolt).
Is it there?
I can't do that for you.

Is the thunderbolt symbol next to a USB 3.1 (usb-c) port? See the image at the link below.
The only advanced USB port option that is described in the Maintenance & Service guide specifications for your notebook is the following.
"USB 3.1 Gen1 Type-C port (support data transfer, DisplayPort 1.2 out up to 4096×2304 (60Hz), HP Sleep & Charge)"
Special thanks to @EddyK for helping me realize that my musing was correct. The symbol you are seeing is not Thunderbolt, it is sleep and charge instead.
So.
The answer is that you do not have a Thunderbolt port on your mainstream Pavilion 15 notebook.
