Hi:

Chapter 1, page 3 of the service manual indicates that your notebook's M.2 slot only supports SATA SSD's not NVMe.

HP Notebook PC (AMD)Models: HP 17-y000 – 17-y099 Maintenance and Service Guide

You can install a larger capacity M.2 SATA SSD if you want, but a NVMe SSD will not work.

That FX900 does not appear to be compatible with your system.  It is PCIe express gen4 and your system is gen3.  In addition the users manual indicates that your SSD drive is type SATA-3.

If you have that SATA-3 it will look like this

and this is the FX900

Even if it fits in the socket it may not work.

I can possibly make a recommendation but need to know what you currently have for a drive.

Go to the below site and enter your serial number and report back the part number(s) of any drives

https://partsurfer.hp.com/partsurfer/

Also, using the windows command prompt, please run the following command and report back what it reveals

wmic /namespace:\\root\microsoft\windows\storage path msft_disk get Model,BusType

for example

[edit] What paul wrote is correct.  A larger SATA-3 could be used.  I assume you also have an HDD drive.  It could easily be replaced with and SSD of same or larger size.

Thank you! Can you recommend any good ssd 500Gb for my laptop?

HP Recommended

You're very welcome.

I believe that this would be the best performing SATA SSD you can buy nowadays...

Does not look hopeful for 500gb.  Your SanDisk SD8SNAT-128G-1006 is the  "Z400s" and the available ones that are likely to work are described here along with other variations.

M.2 2280 64GB SD8SNAT-064G
M.2 2280 128GB SD8SNAT-128G
M.2 2280 256GB SD8SNAT-256G

The largest lis 256gb.  I rarely see any SATA-3 type larger than 256.

There are other options. Please look at this video and see if it is your system.  You will have to disassembly it to be sure.

The image at 2:26 shows

Top left corner:  no DVD but connector for one

Bottom left :  no HDD but a connector to add a 2.5 HDD or SDD

Bottom Right corner: that 128gb SATA-3 drive.

If you have that connector (shown below) you can add a 2.5in SDD of 1TB size like this one.

You may need a tray to hold the SSD or HDD in place.  Look at that parts list and see if a tray is available.  I think you need 905974-001 but check that partsurfer.

The caddy is made of rubber which is probably good for an HDD but not needed for SSD.  Possibly you could use electrical tape to hold the SDD in place.

[edit] Paul beat me to it again!

The 128 GB SATA drive capacity is just what HP offered in the model series, not the maximum capacity supported.

You should be able to install a 1 TB SATA M.2 SSD if you wanted to.

You don't need to install an OEM SATA SSD.

You can install any brand M.2 SATA SSD you want, but IMHO, the WD Blue is the best one out there currently based on performance for the price.

I can almost 100% guarantee you that if you install a NVMe SSD in your PC it won't work.
