Elite x2 1012 G1
Unknown

I've got an Elite x2 1012 G1 on the way, along with a replacement M.2 SSD that I bought to put in the Elite x2. I've just realized that the SSD was actually double-sided though, and I had neglected to check if there was enough clearance in the Elite x2 to fit it in.

I can't seem to find anything that conclusively indicates whether it takes double-sided SSDs or not -- some users on forums indicate that they've managed to fit in 1TB SSDs not in the hardware maintenance manual, although those SSDs are all single-sided. On the other hand, there's a record on a benchmark site that shows an Elite x2 1012 G1 with an ADATA SX8200 Pro 1TB, which is a double-sided card. The other listed specs are a little inconsistent though (e.g. 4k display).

There also seems to be a cable that runs underneath the SSD near the screw hole -- if that cable's thick enough, I reckon a double-sided SSD won't be able to fit properly (e.g. without bending the SSD, or compressing the cable). So, I'd like to ask if anyone has managed to stick a double-sided SSD into the Elite x2 1012 G1, or if they have clearer photos of the M.2 SSD slot, especially underneath. Thanks!

I see no problem there. The cable can be slightly rerouted around the SSD if needed and the cable is no thicker than the screwhole tower and at the screw end of the SSD the chips do not go all the way to the screw so it will sit on top of the tower and the cable will run underneath.

The images in this Manual are terrible:

Service Manual

See p. 39. It appears the M.2 SSD fits in a recepticle that is at least as thick as the motherboard, and not on top of the motherboard so you should be OK. Your double sided SSD will not be thicker than the motherboard. Have you studied this Manual and noted the steps it is going to take to disassemble this thing? Just saying it looks like a pretty technical task with suction cups and such. Good luck and be careful.

I've got a much better photo here, courtesy of iFixit:

Looks like the M.2 connector is mounted flush with the motherboard. While it does look like the chips on the bottom side of the SSD (closer to the aluminium case) would fit, the cable near the screw hole is cause for concern. That's why I was seeking confirmation on this -- it would be kind of a pain to have to wait for another SSD to be shipped to me, after all.

About the repair procedure -- yeah, I'm quite aware of what I'll need to do, and it seems like a breeze compared to some of the other laptops I've had to take apart, like a HP consumer laptop with the HDD buried below the motherboard. Brr.

Alright, I'll take your word for it. Lemme try it out with the SX8200 Pro when everything comes -- I'll keep you updated!

I can confirm that a double-sided SSD will indeed fit -- it's kind of tight, especially if there are chips near to the screw hole on the bottom side, but just don't tighten the screw too much and you'd be good.
