Does this laptop have the GL45 or GL40

Hi all,

Long story short: Upgraded fro Celeron 900 to T6600 successfully, even if that CPU is not in the service manual. Working great, performance is really good now. Now, I didn't update the bios, which is F.15 right now, I know the latest one is F.37 I think,  my question is Can I upgrade to a 9400? Is this board a GL45 Chipset or GL40, I'm using linux and I see this:

  Intel GM45 Chipset on the output of the kernel. My mainboard has this numbers printed on it:

    DAAX3MB16A1

    REV: A

I was wondering because my idea is put a 9400 but that is a 1066 fsb cpu, and looking all over the threads here in HP Support I see no answer, so that is my question(s):

1. Can I go up to 9300 with this bios

2. Can I go up to 9400 with the same bios/chipset (GL40? GL45?) I'm confused because linux detect this as GL45 which supports 1066 cpus

3. Do I need to update the BIOS to put the T9300?

Hi:

According to the parts list for your notebook below, the motherboard has the GL40 chipset.

Look next to the PC Board line.

So, that means no processor with a 1066 MHz FSB will work.

You will need to stick with an 800 MHz processor in the same family as the T6600.

I do not want to update the BIOS, with this one (F.15) can I go up without issue to a T9300 or T9500?

or I need to update the bios to get up there?

You're very welcome.

Unfortunately, that I do not know.

The T9300/T9500 are older processors than the T6600, so it is possible they may work without a BIOS update.

Those processors were supported on the older Mobile Intel 965 chipset.

It all depends on if the motherboard has the microcodes for those two processors, or if the BIOS update has the microcodes for those two processors.

If you look under the revision history link below, the only BIOS update that added support for new processors (and it doesn't say which ones), is F.16A

So IMO, if your notebook has BIOS F.16 or newer installed, then whatever processor microcodes are included in that BIOS release will work.

Updating the BIOS beyond F.16 would probably not make a difference.

I see on that list that the T9300 is from 2008 and T6600 from 2009 so probably,  excellent information Paul, I will keep you posted if I update the BIOS (I'm thinking about it) and if I update the CPU, my question now is

I will get a noticeable performace increase from going from T6600 to a 9300/9500? I know they have more cache but it's worth it from a performance point of view?

I'm really happy to say that last week I got rid of the celeron 900 since that doesn't have stepping, was slower like a turle, and runs hottter.

What I like to do is to use that link I posted, and do a comparison chart of processors using the compare option.

I did the T6600 vs the T9500 below.  I figure if you are planning to upgrade, you may as well go to the max.

The T9500 has 3x the L2 cache, which is good, and it will run 400 Mhz faster, which I suppose is pretty good, but it will run hotter than the T6600.

And the T9500 supports VT, if that matters to you.
