Hi there I was wondering if it was possible to upgrade my cpu on a hp dv7 3111ea the cpu that i have in now is a INTEL CORE I5 430M i5-430M Processor 2.26GHz and I was wondering if I could use an i7 and I came across this thread https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebooks-Archive-Read-Only/dv7-3111ea/td-p/3985586

in which the guy says he has the same laptop model as me but says his system board number is 600862-001 but mine appears to be 580973-001.

So I have few of questions.

1. Is mine and his system boards different or the same

2. If they're different will mine support an i7 processor or not

3. If my system board is capable of handling an i7 which ones and are there any other issues I need to be aware of? Does going from an i5 with built-in graphics to a 7i without cause any issues

Thanks for help Matt

Your laptop has the HM55 chipset on the motherboard. It also has the G105M graphics with 512 mb dedicated video memory. That video will be operative no matter which CPU you install. It will accept up to an i7-840QM.  This is the Manual for the "Entertainment" version of the dv7-3100 series and applies to yours but only two processors were offered. For some reason, only the motherboard with 1 gb video chip is listed but yours will take the same processors and i7-840QM compatibility was added later. Post back with any more questions.

I've been told my system broad will only support i3/i5 processors as it only has 6 chips in the highlighted area of the system broad  in this picture.

And if I want to run an i7 I need to have one that has 8 chips in that area like this one

The Manuals in this model series are incomplete and somewhat contradictory. That seems like plausible advice so I am not going to insist its otherwise. I have to admit I could not find a Manual that specifically covers your model or mentions your motherboard.
