Pavilion dv6-3113st
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi everyone,

As a quarantine project, I decided to upgrade my old dv6-3113st notebook and finally upgraded it's ram and changed the hard drive with an ssd. I'm trying to play a game on my computer released at 2004 but I cannot play it properly because my external gpu doesn't kick in even though all performance settings are on their highest and the running application is assigned to work with high performance gpu. Unfortunately, I cannot change switchable graphics settings in my bios to fixed mode because HP doesn't have such option for my model. I know that this was just an entertainment notebook back in time but advanced users should be able to at least configure which gpu to use. I've been searching for a week about how to do this but I couldn't come up with anything proper. I'm using every software with their latest version, including the BIOS. But unfortunately even the windows doesn't recognize my gpu as the high performance gpu.

My OS: Windows 10 Home 64bit version 1909

BIOS version: InsydeH20 Rev3.5 version F.29

AMD driver version: 15.301.1901-160226a-318062E

Radeon Settings Version: 2016.0226.1531.27895

Catalyst software version: 15.8

Here are some screenshots for you to understand my situation thoroughly:

Sorry for turkish menus. But as you can imagine "yüksek performans" stands for "high performance".

There might be a little quirk about this game because the executable file isn't actually the game itself. But when I start the executable file, I can see the real running application in the catalyst control center (the running file is named "metin2client.bin") and change it's gpu settings but the gpu doesn't kick in as you can see from the first screenshot.

Do you guys have any idea about how I can solve this problem?

I saw lots of people on forums having the same problem like I do. I hope HP proves me that I didn't make a bad decision by buying an HP laptop 10 years ago 😛 . Thank you all for your attention!

@alavan

Thank you for posting on HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help,

Computers with Dynamic Mode switchable graphics switch between the integrated, or power-saving, GPU and the discrete, or high-performance, GPU based on application needs. Specific applications are configured using the Catalyst Control Center software. If the Switchable Graphics screen allows application-level settings, your computer has Dynamic Mode switchable graphics.

See the Changing Dynamic Mode switchable graphics default settings section of this document for more information on accessing the Catalyst Control Center software.

  • NOTE: Dynamic Mode switchable graphics were introduced in HP computers because Dynamic Mode preserves maximum battery life and is configurable based on your preferences. Dynamic Mode enables the computer to use both the integrated and discrete graphics processors without restarting or resetting the display. Some computers with Dynamic Mode switchable graphics can be set to operate in Fixed Mode by selecting Fixed Mode in the BIOS settings. See the OpenGL Applications Cannot Be Configured to Use the Discrete GPU support document for more information on changing BIOS settings on supported models.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hello,

I saw the documentations million times before you sent me but still thank you for your time. But it appears to be my Catalyst Control Center is trying to overthrone me by ignoring my selections about some specific applications. For example I monitored my gpu usage with the AMD software whilst I was using Visual Studio 2019 and saw that the high performance gpu was working just fine. I've also decided to test what happens if I want to save my battery and to achieve that I marked visual studio to work with power saving gpu, but my 10 year old and probably ruled by a crazy AI computer again decided not to obey my preferences and kept using high performance gpu.

Your solution unfortunately doesn't work at the moment and I think I ran out of solutions. I wrote this complaint to the microsoft and amd forums too but they don't do more than you are already doing. I think I need a professional help through TeamViewer to examine my preferences and guide me if I'm doing something wrong. Is it possible?

Thank you.
