I bought a refurbished EliteBook 840 G4 with Windows 10 installed in September 2023. It has a Tablet setting, but I can't fold the screen a full 180 degrees back to effectively use the Tablet mode.

My question is: is it possible to replace the hinges with longer versions that can allow the screen to fold all the way back?

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Hello! It's understandable why you're asking about the hinges on your EliteBook 840 G4. The "Tablet mode" setting in Windows 10 can be confusing if your hardware doesn't fully support it.

Unfortunately, it's not possible to simply replace the hinges on your EliteBook 840 G4 to make it a 2-in-1 convertible that folds back 360 degrees. Here’s a breakdown of why:

Design and Construction: The EliteBook 840 G4 is designed as a traditional clamshell laptop. The chassis, display housing, and the internal cabling are all engineered for a limited range of motion. A 360-degree hinge requires a completely different design to protect the screen and internal components when it's folded back.

What is "Tablet Mode" in Windows 10?

The "Tablet Mode" you're seeing is a standard feature in Windows 10. It's a software setting that changes the user interface to be more touch-friendly, with larger icons and a full-screen Start menu. This mode is available on many laptops, even if they don't have a touchscreen or a 360-degree hinge.

Hinge Replacements: While you can find replacement hinges for your laptop, they are designed to be direct replacements for the original parts. There are no "longer" or modified hinges available that would allow for a 360-degree fold. Trying to force the screen back further will likely cause significant damage to the display, the hinges themselves, and the laptop's casing.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
