why i7 dual core ? not quad core ? did my elitebook do not support intel i7 quad core ?

HP Recommended

You are right. There is no differentiation between motherboards which can take dual or quad core processors on the list for the 8470p

Manual

On many models there are different boards for dual and quad core processors. We have had a lot of reports of mysterious failures when attempting to put Quad Core processors where Dual Cores had been but there is no definitive answer. Technically, theoretically you should be able to install this:

Intel Quad Core i7-3540M 3.00-GHz processor (SC turbo up to 3.70-GHz; 1600-MHz FSB, 4.0-MB L3 cache, 35 W)

it's weird.. i7 3540M is a dual core on ark intel.com.

http://ark.intel.com/products/71255/Intel-Core-i7-3540M-Processor-4M-Cache-up-to-3_70-GHz

but HP Manual said i7 3540M is Quad Core Processor...

LOL

Is it possible to flash the bios with that of a 8470w on to the 8470p? Could this fix the issue?

HP Recommended

Yes if you need a new weight to use as a boat anchor go ahead and do the flash. Seriously it is not a BIOS issue it is a hardware issue. As far as I know they use the same BIOS.

Dear All I think is possible

8470P  and 3632QM can upgrate with out any problem and also support XMP DDR3 bus 2133 SO-DIMM in XMP profile.

 Dear hpchih,

Please look at TDP of your current CPU if 35Watt

       Example :

        http://ark.intel.com/th/products/64895/Intel-Core-i5-3360M-Processor-3M-Cache-up-to-3_50-GHz

that all system support for only current 35Watt CPU include Battery and adapter but

if you not mind about Battery use HP 8470p top model also have 90Watt Adapter standard model is

60Watt Please be careful before take any action

PS.  new CPU may need new bios please update lastest bios before upgrade.

       Best Regards,

I have a hp 8470p Elitebook it came with an i7 3520m single core.
This week I installed my updated BIOS and also installed a Intel Quad Core i7 3740QM 2.70 GHz Mobile Processor  64 bit.
It was a simple plug and play operation, it runs slick as glass, and I can certainly tell the difference in the speed during my CAD drawing operation.
Well worth the $60.00 price I paid for it on Ebay.
Now I would like to upgrade my stand alone GPU, which is a amd radeon hd 7570m, for something faster, any suggestions?

I ment, Duel Core, not single core.
But the swap was a definite success...
