EliteBook 8470p
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

One of the USB ports also functions as a charging port (e.g., cell phone charger).

When the PC is off this USB port still furnishes power.

I use all of the USB ports and normally plug a device that draws power (i.e., external SSD, fan, PC cooling pad, etc.) in this port.

If there a way to shut off the charging function from this USB port whiile still being able to to use the USB for normal function when the PC is on?

Basically do not want to drain the internal PC balttery when the PC is off irregardless of what is still plugged into the USB charging port.

Thank you.

Thanks so much friends.

Unfortunately, I have 8470p so it sounds like I am stuck with the USB always functioning as a charging port when the PC is off.  That stinks but my question is answered.

Will just have to unplug from the USB port each time I power down to avoid the battery drain.

I previously tried using a USB splitter on another USB port so I would not use the USB charging port at all.  But could not get the combinations of an external drive, cooling fan and/or mouse to work when multiple devices hung off USB splitter.

Really appreciate your assistance and guidance.  It says something about people who will help others (without being compensated) to do the right thing in life.

Yes, the function can be turned off in BIOS. I believe under System Configuration. Can't remember exactly where it is from memory but can check later if you don't find it.

Cheryl,

Thank you so much for the information.  What you say makes sense.

How would I be able to get into the PCs BIOS into System Configuraion to turn off this charging feature.

Really appreciate this.

All the best.

Immediately after powering on start tapping the Esc key. This will open a menu where F10 BIOS can be selected.

Cheryl,

Got to BIOS and Port Options.

Could not figure out which box to unclick to stop the USB’s charging function.

Got to the right church (thanks to you), now need help to get to the proper pew.

Thanks.

The only laptop I have to check isn't an Elitebook but  it is on System  Configuration tab and has "USB charging" -Disable/Enable. It may be different on the Elitebook. Will try to find someone who has one to check.

@IT_WinSec do you have access to an Elitebook to check the setting?

Hi @Peter74

Personally I have two Elitebooks at the moment and I checked there.

On my Elitebook 840G1 :

Open the BIOS/UEFI (F10)

Go to Advanced -> Port options (?)

Uncheck the option called "USB charging port function"

This will disable the USB charging function when the PC is off or in Sleep mode.

Save the changes and exit BIOS

But I checked the BIOS/UEFI for Elitebook 8470p as well and it is somewhat different and older compared to 840 series.

In 8470p there is no such an option so you cannot disable this charing here.

Hope this answers your question.
