HP Spectre x360 - 13-ap0011nb
Microsoft Windows 11

I recently had some updates installed automatically.

After this, when turning off my computer, the fan blows really loudly and doesn't stop to do so untill my battery is completely drained. The device also seems to heat up while powered off.

Weirdly, the fan blows much quiter when the computer is actually turned on.

Things I've tried without success:

  1. turned off the fast power-up option
  2. uninstall the updates, reboot computer
  3. perform a hard reset (multiple times)
  4. reset bios settings (since I couldn't find the fan settings to put them on PWM instead of DC, which I read could help - haven't found this option though)

What else can I try? I'm fairly desperate because this means I cannot use my computer without a power cord since it overheats + drains the battery when I turn it off.

Hi @PepijnK

If your HP Spectre x360 - 13-ap0011nb is experiencing loud fan noise and heating up while powered off after a system update, the following steps can help troubleshoot and possibly resolve the issue:

Steps to Resolve Fan and Heating Problems:

  1. Check Power Settings:

    • Ensure that your power settings do not have features that may prevent the system from shutting down completely, such as “Fast Startup.” Since you mentioned disabling it, confirm that the setting is still off.
  2. Perform a Hard Reset:

    • Completely shut down your laptop, disconnect the power adapter, and remove all peripheral devices.
    • Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds to ensure complete power drain.
    • Reconnect the power adapter and other devices and start the laptop.
  3. Update BIOS and Drivers:

    • Visit the HP Support website and check for any available BIOS updates or other driver updates, particularly for the chipset and thermal management system.
  4. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics:

    • Use HP PC Hardware Diagnostics to run a system test to identify any underlying hardware issues, especially related to thermal management.
  5. Check for Background Processes:

    • Open Task Manager and check for any unusual background processes that might be running during shutdown.
  6. Reinstall Updates:

    • Since uninstalling the previous update didn't help, consider reinstalling Windows updates to ensure they were correctly implemented.
