I will post the question again since no one has responded since the 1st posting on Wed.

Are the emails from HP legitimate or not? They seem to be but before I click on them to do the upgrade suggested, I need to be sure they are really from HP. In the past, I have gotten these sorts of updates via HP ASSISTANT which I have to click on to get into after seeing a message highlighted on the blue question mark on my task bar.

 

Help please.

No one answers likely because no one can see what's in your Inbox.

 

The question lacks any context - what's in the email (in general), to whom it is addressed, did you subscribe, what does your spam filter think)...

 

There are a couple of ways to check an email - For example,

if your mailer supports it, view the raw message, check the domain information.

 

Check the "from" address.

 

What else?

 

If the address includes hp.com

and NOT convoluted "maybe.hp.stuff-and-words.com",

Email is perhaps legitimate.

 

The exact address (at this writing) alerts @ alerts.hp.com  (without the spaces) is a real return address

 

"Alerts" can be set to subscribed.

 

For those reading, 

Find bulletins / Notices that are relevant to your device

  • Subscribe to HP Alerts

Get connected with updates from HP

and / or

  • Check for information at your computer's support website

Open Support Home

Enter the name of your device

When the website support page opens, select Category Bulletins and Notices (wording may vary)

Sorry I didn't give more info. I looked again at the emails and it just says HP Support. Then, I clicked on REPLY as though I was going to respond and it shows the email really came from HP Alerts as you suggested.. So, they are legitimate and now know how to check them out. Thanks ever so much for the help.

I might have worded that better....

It's actually OK that you didn't provide a lot of details - "too much" information can be worse than not enough.

 

For example, posting actual email addresses is banned - that limits what you (we) can say about email(s).  Smiling.

 

Regardless, then - you have what you need now and that is the important bit.

Good to be cautious, by the way - there is a lot out there that is best avoided at all costs.
