Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I got 2 32GB SODIMM RAM chips to install in my 17-by4000 laptop. I can get either chip to work in the primary slot, but when I add the second chip to the second slot, the system won't start. I read a note about enabling the second RAM slot in the BIOS, but I don't have that option in the limited startup BIOS. Does anyone know how to enable or allow the system to use both memory slots without having to use some third party BIOS to access the settings?

Hi @MyklarCure,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

To help narrow this down, could you share a bit more detail?

  • The brand and exact model of the 32 GB SODIMM sticks (DDR4 vs DDR5, speed, voltage)
  • Whether the RAM sticks were purchased as a matched kit or separately
  • What happens when both sticks are installed (black screen, power cycling, caps lock blinking, error beeps, etc.)
  • Has the BIOS/UEFI been updated to the latest version for this laptop?

Things to know up front (important)

On most HP laptops (including the 17-by series), there is no BIOS setting to “enable” the second RAM slot. If the hardware and firmware support it, the system should automatically detect and use both modules. If it doesn’t boot, it’s almost always a compatibility or limitation issue rather than a hidden BIOS toggle.

Troubleshooting steps to try

Here are some safe and common steps that often resolve this:

  1. Confirm the laptop actually supports 64 GB
    • Many 17-by models officially support 32 GB total (2×16 GB), even though a single 32 GB stick may appear to work.
    • The memory controller in the CPU is usually the limiting factor, not the BIOS.

I hope this helps.
