It’s not about heavy loads…

HP heatsinks seem to have recurring issues, and it’s time the company acknowledged this and started replacing faulty parts.

If a mid-range laptop is overheating during basic tasks, that’s a manufacturer’s problem - plain and simple.

You can’t even stress-test these machines properly due to restrictive firmware power limits.

In regular use, the CPU drops to 0.38 GHz across all cores due to “thermal protection”.

In stress tests, it’s the same story - 0.38 GHz, and then the temps are suddenly “fine”.

But how can temperatures be “OK” if the CPU is locked at 0.38 GHz the entire time?!

Try these steps:

Update BIOS and Drivers:

  • Ensure your BIOS and drivers are up to date. HP regularly releases updates that may include improvements for thermal management.
  • Use HP Support Assistant or visit HP Support to download and install the latest updates for your device.

Clean the Laptop:

  • Dust accumulation in vents and fans can restrict airflow. Regularly clean the laptop's vents using a can of compressed air.

Check Power and Cooling Settings:

  • Go to Power Options in the Control Panel and select a power plan that balances performance and energy consumption.
  • In the Advanced Power Settings, ensure that adaptive cooling is enabled.

Manual Fan Control:

  • Consider software solutions that allow manual fan control to maximize cooling, if supported by your laptop's hardware.

Ambient Cooling Aids:

  • Use a laptop cooling pad to assist in dissipating heat.
  • Ensure that the laptop is used on a hard, flat surface to allow proper ventilation from underneath.

Thermal Paste Application:

  • If you are comfortable with hardware, reseating the CPU thermal paste with high-quality thermal paste can improve heat dispersion. This should be done by qualified service personnel if you're unfamiliar with the process.

Thank you for your response and suggestions. Unfortunately, these steps don’t address the overheating issue on my business HP Envy 16-h1001nc (serial:Edited), which is under active factory warranty until November 09, 2025.

The laptop throttles to 0.38 GHz across all cores during basic tasks (not heavy loads) due to thermal protection, rendering it nearly unusable. This persisted after Service in Slovakia replaced the thermal paste in February 2025, confirming the issue isn’t related to dust, thermal paste, or software settings. The laptop is clean, and I’ve ensured it’s used on a hard surface with proper ventilation. BIOS and driver updates or cooling pads can’t fix what appears to be a defective heatsink or vapor chamber. The temperatures only appear “fine” because the CPU is locked at 0.38 GHz, which masks the cooling failure.

Given the active warranty and Slovakia’s failed repair, I request assistance to arrange diagnostic testing and replacement of the faulty heatsink through an authorized service center in Croatia, per the warranty’s Hardware Maintenance Off-Site terms.

I can provide temperature logs (e.g., HWinfo) but not the repair details from Slovakia because no details came with "repaired" laptop. If this can’t be resolved here, please guide me on escalating to HP’s warranty team or a supervisor, as this defect significantly impairs the laptop’s functionality.

No response to my HP Renew Envy 16-h1001nc (serial:Edited, warranty until Nov 09, 2025) overheating issue or my HP Renew form submission (no confirmation received).

 

The laptop throttles to 0.38 GHz on basic tasks, and the RTX 4060 hits 70°C+ at 0–5% load, despite Slovakia’s thermal paste replacement (Feb 2025). Generic suggestions (BIOS, cooling pads) don’t address the faulty heatsink.

 

Please confirm my form’s receipt and arrange urgent diagnostic testing/heatsink replacement in Croatia per warranty terms.

I'm having the exact same issues, although it has progressed from "occasionally" to "almost immediately after power-up".  I took off the bottom and blew out the fans with compresed air, but it didn't help.  I'm ready to try the thermal paste (and check if there is more dust that I can't see from the bottom) but the message following this one said that didn't help, at least in that case.   

 

My computer is out of warranty, and the heatsink paste application is well within my abilities, so I may try that, but the fact that this conversation is less than a week old makes me suspect that the problem has gotten worse lately not just for me, and that maybe the latest Microsoft Windows 11 updates caused it to get this much worse?
