Hi. Just purchased a new envy and need to know what the two ports on the left side of the machine are. They look like USB-C but nothing works with anything I have that's USB-C. Also the power adapter does not work in these ports. I tried using Thunderbolt/USBC adapters and I can't get a thumb drive or a USB mouse to work. What are they called on the Device Manager? What are they and are mine defective?

@hickpop,

Welcome to our HO Community forum!

It sounds like your HP Envy laptop might have Thunderbolt 4 or USB-C ports, but not all USB-C ports are the same. If your devices aren't working with those ports, it could be due to one of the following reasons:

1. Check the Port Type:

  • Look for small icons next to the ports. They can give you clues about their purpose:
    • Thunderbolt Icon (lightning bolt with an arrow): Indicates a Thunderbolt 3 or 4 port, which uses the USB-C shape but supports more advanced features like faster data transfer and video output. Not all USB-C devices are compatible with Thunderbolt.
    • Battery Icon: Indicates the port supports Power Delivery (PD) for charging.
    • Display Icon: Indicates support for external monitors.
    • If there's no icon, it might be a standard USB-C port with limited functionality.

2. Compatibility:

  • If your accessories are basic USB-C devices, ensure the ports support USB 3.2 Gen 1/2 or similar. Some ports prioritize Thunderbolt and may not work with certain cables or accessories without drivers or adapters.

3. Cables and Accessories:

  • Some older USB-C devices or cables might not meet the standards required by newer laptops.
  • If you're trying to connect a display or dock, confirm compatibility with Thunderbolt or DisplayPort over USB-C.

4. Drivers or Configuration:

  • HP Envy laptops sometimes require drivers for Thunderbolt ports to enable full functionality. Check in Device Manager for any unrecognized devices or errors.

5. Testing:

  • If you're not sure, plug in a USB-C device like a flash drive or smartphone and see if it gets recognized.
  • Try charging a USB-C device using the port to test its Power Delivery function.

If you're still uncertain, feel free to provide more details (e.g., specific Envy model number or the accessories you're testing), and I can assist further!

Kind Regards,
