Howdy all,
I plan on uprading the memory in this lapptop, an HP Envy x360 Converible 15m-bq121dx, SN 8CG7493HHN. I plan to install a Crucial T500 SSD and (2) 8GB DDR4. I wonder it it will affect the ability of the computer to run on battery alone? I ask because about 4 years ago I installed a Crucial MX500 SSD and 16GB RAM in an HP Pavilion, product ID: M1Y29UA#ABA, SN:5CD5357Y2J and it won't run on it's battery, it has to be plugged in. It's been this way since the upgrade. I even got a new battery and it didn't make a difference. I wonder if I might have the same issue if I upgrade the Envy? The (older) Pavilion lives on a desk, so being plugged in isn't a problem. However, the (newer) Envy MUST be portable, it has to be able to run on the battery.

Hi:
I've never read any posts like that happening to any notebook until I just read yours.
I've read many where folks installed memory or SSD's, and they didn't work at all but not that they worked, but the person could no longer run the notebook without the power adapter.
I can't imagine why that would ever happen to your 15m-bq121dx, although I understand your concern.
One thing you should know however, is that the Crucial T500 will not run anywhere near its maximum advertised read/write speeds from your notebook's Gen 3.0 SSD slot.
This table shows the maximum transfer speeds each PCIe slot generation can provide.
PCIe Speeds and Limitations | Crucial.com
Unless you plan on transferring the T500 to a newer PC in the future, the Crucial P3 PCIe 3.0 SSD will work just fine and should cost quite a bit less.
I don't know what memory you are buying, but if it's not Crucial, if you buy DDR4-2400, it should be CL17 and if you are buying DDR4-3200, it should be CL22.
Your notebook's processor cannot run the memory any faster than 2400 MHz.

Thanks again Paul. I'm going to look into the SSD you recommended, as I have no plans to transfer the SSD. I'm just delaying the need to buy a new laptop. I upgraded the laptop I'm using right now (Pavilion) over 4 years ago, and I don't see any reason it'll need replaced anytime soon. That makes me think that if I upgrade the Envy I'll get a lot more use out of it, and it'll speed up.
