The unhinged screen is still an issue. Funny enough, I never had the courage to use it as a tablet by flipping it all the way back. Even though I always make sure to open it extremely gently, it broke unexpectedly.

I've read it needs to be repaired but in the meanwhile I wonder if I won't be able to use my computer at all.  Could you let me know if the screen stopped working?

Hi @Sandra2000

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I can imagine how unsettling it feels to see the hinge give way unexpectedly, especially when you’ve always handled the device gently. You’re right that a physical hinge repair will eventually be needed, but until then, whether you can continue using the computer depends on the condition of the display and its connections.

What to check right now

1. Screen functionality

  • Power on the laptop and observe if the display lights up normally.
  • If the image is clear and stable, the screen itself is still functional.
  • If you see flickering, lines, or the screen remains black, the hinge damage may have affected the display cable.

2. External monitor test

  • Connect the laptop to an external monitor using HDMI.
  • If the external display works fine, it confirms the system board and graphics are intact, and only the built‑in screen or cable is affected.

3. Safe positioning

  • Avoid opening or closing the lid further, as movement could worsen the damage.
  • Keep the laptop in a fixed position where the screen is viewable and stable.

4. Backup important data

  • Since physical damage can worsen suddenly, it’s wise to back up your files to an external drive or cloud storage.

Summary

If the display still shows a normal image, you can continue using the laptop carefully in its current position. If the screen has gone dark or shows distortion, you can still use the computer with an external monitor until the hinge and display are repaired.
