Apparently there's a lot of peeps that got the same 90B problem. But, mine's a bit different.

It ran at the max rpm for a few minutes before it burned, the laptop was working perfectly fine, the board didn't get burned at all (and in fact the only thing that's broken is the fan), it was not charged during the tragedy, it was placed on top of an external laptop cooling fan and received enough airflow.

The fan cable burned and i was forced to replace it. Unfortunately, it was not easy to find a replacement for it.

I tried re-wiring the cable and it worked on several other laptops (HP brand too) with the same 4-pin socket. All of the other devices worked perfectly fine with the same fan without any 90B errors, although all of em are older HP models (like atleast 1-2 years older than this one).

However it doesn't work on this particular device.

Is there any reason why it doesn't work, maybe software problems? or compability issues since it's not really an authentic HP fan cable/socket for this model anymore. And by the way, I also used a 4-pin socket from a fan of an older HP Laptop.

If anyone has a suggestion or a way to fix it (or has a link to buy this particular model's fan), I would love to hear it

Thanks in advance!

Hi @DontFixIfItWork,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The 90B error on HP laptops indicates a cooling fan problem, and since you've already replaced the fan and verified it works on other HP laptops, there are a few possible explanations and steps you can take to resolve the issue on your specific HP Laptop 14.

Possible Causes and Solutions

Compatibility Issues:

  • Different Fan Specifications: Even though the fan works on other HP models, it might not be fully compatible with your specific HP Laptop 14. Different models might have variations in voltage, current requirements, or control protocols.
  • Fan Speed and RPM: The BIOS of your specific laptop model might require a specific RPM signal from the fan, and if the replacement fan doesn't match the expected signal, the BIOS might still detect an error.

BIOS/Software Issues:

  • BIOS Settings: Check if there's a BIOS update available for your laptop. Sometimes, updating the BIOS can resolve compatibility issues.
  • Reset BIOS: Try resetting the BIOS to default settings to see if it resolves the issue.

Hardware Connection:

  • Pin Configuration: Ensure that the pin configuration and wiring of the fan are correct. Even slight differences can cause the fan not to be detected properly.
  • Secure Connection: Make sure the fan connector is securely and correctly connected to the motherboard.

Steps to Troubleshoot

BIOS Update:

  • Visit the HP support website, search for your laptop model, and check if there's a BIOS update available. Follow the instructions to update the BIOS.

Reset BIOS to Default:

  • Enter the BIOS setup during the boot process (usually by pressing F10, Esc, or Delete key during startup).
  • Find the option to reset BIOS settings to default and save the changes.

Check Fan Specifications:

  • Compare the specifications of the original fan with the replacement fan. Look for differences in voltage, current, and RPM ratings.

Use the Exact Replacement Part:

  • It’s best to use an exact replacement part for the cooling fan. You can try searching for the fan using the laptop’s model number on HP’s parts store. Websites like eBay, Amazon, or specialized laptop parts retailers might have the exact fan you need.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
