I have a HP Laptop 17-CN0205dg. I noticed the battery storage was down to 90% even though my laptop power adapter was plugged in. I ran the HP test on the adapter and the battery and they both passed but mu battery storage was still dropping. I ordered a new power adapter and plugged it in only to find the battery storage still at 86% after 1.5 hours charging with the new adapter. I have plugged into different outlets and different rooms, too. What could be the problem. This laptop was purchased in September of 2022.

Hi @Memoma,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Laptop 17-CN0205dg battery is not charging past 86% even though the power adapter is connected and both battery and adapter tests passed. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

a. Check Windows Battery Settings

Go to Settings > System > Power & Battery > Battery > Battery Health.

Some HP laptops have a battery conservation mode or Maximum Lifespan mode that limits charging to around 80–90% to extend battery longevity.

If enabled, disable this mode to allow full charging.

b. Verify HP Power Manager / BIOS Settings

Open HP Support Assistant or HP Power Manager / Command Center.

Check the Battery Charging Mode: it should be set to “Standard” or “Maximize my battery”.

Modes like “Battery Life Extender” intentionally cap the charge at ~85–90%.

c. Perform a Hard Reset

Shut down the laptop and unplug the adapter.

Press and hold the power button for 15–20 seconds to drain residual power.

Reconnect the adapter and power on to see if charging resumes normally.

d. Update BIOS and Drivers

Even if the battery and adapter test passed, outdated BIOS or chipset drivers can affect charging logic.

Visit HP Support → search your model → download and install the latest BIOS, chipset, and power drivers.

e. Check Battery Status in BIOS

Restart the laptop → Press F10 (or the key for BIOS) during startup.

Check the battery health and charging status in BIOS.

If the battery shows full charge in BIOS but Windows shows 86%, it is likely Windows or HP software limiting charge.

I hope this helps.
