Hello. I have had my laptop since 2020. Up until this fall I used it only when needed. Sometimes I’d be on it a few times a week, others won’t be for a few months. It’s never left on the charger except when in use and once charged, it’s disconnected and shut off. This fall I started homeschooling my global delayed son and have been using it more frequently but still caring for it the way I was previously. On Friday as we were wrapping up school my laptop was sitting on my kitchen table bench, charging, closed. I used it earlier for school and was letting it charge. myself and my two sons were sitting at the same table as the charging laptop when we heard an explosion followed by massive flames, heat as hot as the sun and smoke. My 6 mo th old baby was also in the room. My bench started to burn, the laptop is spitting out hot lava fire and my table runner starts to catch flame. My son and I are panicking trying to figure out how to stop it. I finally grabbed stuff and tossed it outside. Lost my laptop, my bench to the kitchen table and my table runner. All I can say is thank god I was home. The nightmares over had at the what IFs.

My question is it’s obviously out of warranty but I’m curious if something will be done to replace the laptop. The trauma for myself and my kids was terrible. Not to mention the loss of my personal items and information. I’m so scared now to leave anything plugged in and just thank god I was able to stop it and was home. I could have lost my home, my children if they were home alone, or all our lives if it was the middle of the night. I looked up my laptop and it wasn’t part of any recalls nor has any issues of this happening reported.

Hi @Vachurchill,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

Thank you so much for taking the time to share what happened, and I’m truly relieved that you and your children are safe. What you described sounds incredibly frightening, and I’m very sorry you and your family had to experience something like that. Your safety is always the top priority, and we take incidents involving heat, smoke, or fire extremely seriously.

Even though your device is out of warranty, we still want to understand what happened and see how we can support you. Before we proceed, I do need to ask a couple of important questions so we can document this correctly and involve the appropriate HP teams:

  1. Was anyone injured, even minor burns or smoke inhalation?
  2. Was there any property damage besides the bench and table runner?

It would also be very helpful if you could share clear images of the damage to the laptop and any affected items/areas. This will allow our safety and escalation teams to assess the situation and determine next steps.

Once we have that information, we can guide you through the proper escalation process and ensure the case is reviewed thoroughly.

Again, I’m very glad you’re all safe, and I’m here to help you through the next steps.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for the reply.

no one got burned. My 13 year old son, my 6 year old son, my 6 month old daughter and myself were all in the room right next to it all. I was unaware, but learned after, we should have gone to the hospital to be checked out. I could taste the chemicals for over 24 hours. The property damage in total was my laptop, my bench, my table runner and having the clean the entire room due to it leaving a residue on the walls, tables, chairs etc. My 6 year old son is special needs, and we use that laptop to homeschool. He has been really freaked out from this incident, as well as myself. I’ve lost sleep at the what ifs. Thank god, I was home.

I have provided photos. Please let me know if there is anymore information I can provide.

Thank you for your time
