What external cd/rom drive will work with a Chromebook? I have 2 from Amazon (and my past laptop) that the Chromebook won't "read." I need one for music CDs, photo CDs and burning music CDs. Thanks 👍

Hi @dletina,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for your question.

The HP Chromebook x360 14b-cd0000 supports connecting a compatible USB external CD/DVD drive for accessing data discs (such as CDs or DVDs containing photos, documents, or other files). ChromeOS recognizes supported USB optical drives as external storage devices.

However, based on your requirements, there are some ChromeOS limitations to be aware of:

  • Reading data CDs/DVDs: Supported with a compatible USB external optical drive.
  • Playing music (Audio) CDs: ChromeOS has limited native support and may not recognize standard audio CDs.
  • Burning music CDs or other optical media: ChromeOS does not natively support writing or burning CDs/DVDs.

To better understand why your current drives aren't working, could you please let us know:

  • What are the make and model of the two external CD/DVD drives you've tried?
  • Are you connecting them directly to the Chromebook or through a USB hub or adapter?
  • Are you trying to:
    • Read a photo/data CD?
    • Play a music CD?
    • Burn a music CD?

If your primary goal is burning music CDs, a Windows or macOS computer is recommended, as ChromeOS does not provide native optical disc burning support.

Once you provide the model of your external drive and the type of disc you're using, we'll be happy to check whether the issue is with drive compatibility or a limitation of ChromeOS.

I'm an HP Employee.
