HP ENVY 17-j076ez Notebook PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I'm regularely using an unnamed 32 GB USB stick to transfer presentations between this HP ENVY 17 Notebook and other computers. This always worked fine and without any problems. In addition I have several 16 GB and 32 GB Sandisk Ultra or Ultra Fit USB sticks that all work fine. Any USB stick with a capacity of 32 GB or lower I tried still works fine.

Last year I bought a 64 GB SanDisk Extreme Go USB 3.1 Flash drive and copied some movies, picures and audio files on it. I'm not 100% sure, but quite sure I did this on this computer. But when I wanted to use this stick now, it was not recognized anymore. I tried all USB ports, none worked. When I tried to read this stick on another computer it works.

About 3 years ago my original internal HD had a problem. I decided to replace it with a SSD drive. At this time the repair center made a full backup of my old internal HD on an external 1 TB Western Digital USB drive. I don't know how it was done, but to me it's another sign that large USB drives worked in the past. But, like the 64 GB sticks, this drive is not recognized.

On another computer I use a 64 GB Kingston DataTraveler 100 G3 USB 3.0 stick. Again, this stick is not recognized in my HP ENVY 17. The same is true for a brand new 64 GB SanDisk Extreme Go USB 3.1 Flash drive.

To summarize, any USB stick with a capacity of 64 GB or higher is not recognize by the file system.

When any of this USB sticks or drives are attached, a bling-blong sound can be heard and it appears in the Device Manager with an error. It looks like a driver is missing. But when I try to remove the driver and let windows reinstall one, I get the message that the best driver Windows update can find is already installed. I followed many instructions how to deal with the problem, but nothing helped. The worst hint was to remove any USB driver and let Windows decide to reinstall the drivers when needed after a reboot. After this not only my external USB drives but also the built-in Camera no longer worked. I had to revover back to the Restore Point I've set before I started to try fixing the problem.

Any ideas how to fix this issue are welcome.

I suggest reinstalling the chipset drivers.

By the way, an SSD is a PCIe device, not a USB device.

You can test the USB ports by use of the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI utility. It is available on powering up the notebook by tapping the F2 key immediately after powering the notebook on. Once the utility has been invoked, choose Component tests and then USB ports. Run the test. That will test the port at the hardware level.
