I've been having an issue with the fan on my laptop creating abnormally loud noise. During startup the fan is extremely loud and spins constantly. Usually it is ok after that, BUT even during normal use the fan will intermittently start up and become extremely loud for no apparent reason.
I have been using HP Cool sense and updated the BIOS but the fan will still do this even when the laptop is not hot.
The only other options I can see are cleaning the fan, applying new thermal paste or replacing the fan all together.
Any solutions?
Thanks! 🙂

Hi! @ESD10, Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!
I understand the fan on your laptop is making a lot of noise during the startup.
Don't worry I'll try to help you out.
Did you make any software or hardware changes on your laptop?
Please provide the product number of your PC to assist you better.
To properly ventilate the computer, allow at least 7.6 cm (3 in) of clearance on the left side
of the computer. The computer uses an electric fan for ventilation. The fan is controlled by a temperature
sensor and is designed to turn on automatically when high-temperature conditions exist. These conditions
are affected by high external temperatures, system power consumption, power management/battery
conservation configurations, battery fast charging, and software requirements. Exhaust air is displaced
through the ventilation grill located on the left side of the computer.
Try the steps recommended below.
- Download the Windows 10 "Show or Hide Updates" Troubleshooter Package (https://hp.care/2I4SdeH).
- Change the Windows Update Services setting from Automatic (Delayed Start) to Manual.
- In the Control Panel, select Administrative Tools and open Services.
- Scroll down to Windows Update and double-click it to bring up its properties.
- Click Stop to stop the service from running.
- Change the Startup Type to Manual and click OK.
- Install version 9 or 10 of the Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) Driver. If you receive a dialog warning about replacing a newer version of the software, accept it.
- NOTE: You do NOT need to uninstall version 11 before installing version 9 or 10. The presence of some version of the driver is required in order to "upgrade" (or in this case downgrade) it.
- Run the Windows 10 "Show or Hide Updates" Troubleshooter Package and hide updates to the Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) Driver. (Doing so will block your system from automatically reinstalling or showing updates for version 11 of the driver.)
- Change the Windows Update Services setting from Manual back to Automatic (Delayed Start).
- Restart your computer.
Also, try updating the chipset drivers and BIOS on your PC and check if it helps.

Thanks for your response @MrRobot !
I’ll give those steps a shot later on today and let you know if it worked.
To answer your questions: my laptop is an HP 14-bp151sa notebook and I’ve not modified the software or
hardware recently except from updating the BIOS and the Intel graphics drivers.
Thanks for the help, I’ll give it a try shortly,
ESD10 😄
