HP Spectre Pro x360 G2
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi

I have posted this call beginning of the week and did not receive any feedback by a HP expert nor from any other person.

I need advice about which software I can use to update the TPM on my HP Spectre Pro x360 G2 (Product No Y3B95EA#UUZ) running on Bios F.19 and Windows 10 Pro, Version 1803, OS build 17134.81

I highly appreciate your feedback

best Hans

Hi Dragon-Fur

after all the discussions back and forth, I finally decided to install the package (SP84226, https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp84001-84500/sp84226.exe). Yes, it opens a BIOS F.16 page, but also clearly states, that it will not change any newer BIOS Versions.

I accepted to clear the TPM at restart by pressing F1. During restart, it could be clearly observed that only the TPM and not the BIOS was updated. The TPM, Version 5.62.3126.2 not Version 5.62.3126.0 as written in HPSBHF03568 rev. 8 - Infineon TPM Security Update (https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05792935) was installed.

finally, I still am on BIOS F.19. I never had turned on Bitlocker, thus, I did not care about it. The PIN continues to work normally. I did not have to remove and reinstall as described by several colleagues.

Thus, it looks just perfect, best thanks for guiding me through a quite challenging process

Best

Hans

HPSBHF03568 rev. 7 - Infineon TPM Security Update

HP Spectre Pro x360 G2
SLB9665 TPM 2.0 ver. 5.62.3126.0
SP84226

Information sheets:

sp84457.cva

sp84457.html

NOTE the discrepancy between the name of the file in the third column and the downloadable software in the last column.

The information sheet hardware product models list does not include your Spectre machine.  While this is not ALWAYS an indication since some updates are provided to "add" models, in this case the information is likely significant.

In general:

If an update "does not work", it is better not to force the issue -- you may do more damage than good by doing so.

The "other" software / update...

Patch / File

sp84226.exe

Information sheets:

sp84226.cva

sp84226.html

Wait!  The issue with sp84226.exe is that of the noted BIOS level at noted in the information sheet: sp84226.html

My opinion:

This is not something you want to undertake without everything being "as it should".

My advice:

"Wait and see" - in other words, do not do anything yet.

Advice from HP at this time:

HP is aware of discrepancies in the document.  When available, an update to the document will be made.

Open your computer Software and Driver Support page - check for relevant updates there.  In many cases, the Support page will provide the updated driver list before an alert document.

Hi Dragon-Fur

best thanks for your feedback. Thus, I do nothing but wait for a formal HP release of a suitable Trusted Platform Module (TPM) update for HP Spectre Pro x360 G2 on the relevant Bios and Windows 10 Pro Versions.

Best regards

Hi Dragon-Fur

please allow me a follow-up question:

13-June-2018, HPSBHF03568 rev. 8 - Infineon TPM Security Update (https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05792935) has been published.

here now, SP84226, https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp84001-84500/sp84226.exe, is precisely recommended for  my device, the HP Spectre Pro x360 G2. That means, the error on the previous version has been corrected.

you have discussed SP84226 above. I have looked into SP84226. It is made up to start with updating to BIOS F.16, which seems to me fully unreasonable with a device already running on BIOS F.19.

on https://support.hp.com,  and the specific HP software support page for my device:

https://support.hp.com/ch-de/drivers/selfservice/hp-spectre-pro-x360-g2-convertible-pc/8737498/model...

SP84226 is not mentioned. It still lists BIOS F.19 (prev versions F.18, F.17, F.15, F.13), and the page does not mention a TPM update.

thus, please give me advice; should I keep waiting for a precise recommendation on the  HP support page or do you judge this file now suitable to be run on my machine (Windows 10 Pro, Version 1803, OS build 17134.112, BIOS F.19).

Best regards and best thanks for your help and support

What is the TPM version on your system?

Windows key + R

type:  tpm.msc

follow the command with "return" key to open the TPM console

Specification Version...

For now, I continue to advise that if the indications do not support your system, that is, your system BIOS does not match the description / intent of the recommend executable, that you do not install the package.

When offering options / opinions to other people, I usually side with "abundance of caution".

If you do install decide to install the package, the following applies (as found in the html file):

DESCRIPTION:
This package provides updates for the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) Firmware and
the system BIOS. In the event that the system BIOS on the system already
supports the TPM Firmware update, the system BIOS will not be changed. The BIOS
remains the same version, and only the TPM Firmware is updated. The update
installs on supported notebook models using a supported Microsoft Windows
Operating System. It is necessary to restart the system to complete the
installation.

I will ask.

If I get / find a suitable response to your question about the mis-matched BIOS version, I will post back.

Dear Dragon-Fur

best thanks for your support.

my TPM details:

Manufacturer                                                  IFX

Manufacturer Version                                  5.40.1971.2

Specification version                                    2.0

PPI specification version                            1.2

TPM specification sub-version                 1.16 (Thursday, October 30, 2014)

PC client spec version                                  2.56

the statement that the installation should not change the actual BIOS version and the observation that the program starts with the installation of a BIOS 16 version seem to be contradicitionary, best thanks for your efforts to find out what applies and if the program is suitable for my labtop

best thanks and  regards

No response to the internal inquiry I sent out.  The lack of response is not entirely a surprise - we don't always hear back right away for every subject about which we have a question.

I did "test" a similar setup on a Zbook that coincidentally is on a later (newer) BIOS version than the version described in the information sheet.  I downloaded and installed the TPM update > Restarted the computer.

Nada.  No change.

Shut down - boot.

No damage and apparently no change to the TPM version.

Meh.

This means nothing -- my Zbook is not your Spectre.

You and I are not likely the only ones in the situation in which the BIOS is newer than the patch, IF there is need for a change to the document or in the recommended action, the notification will be updated by HP.

I recommend at this point that you do what you feel is right for your situation.

If I have anything to else to offer, I will post back.

Keep an eye on that document and in your mail box (if you are subscribed to alerts).
