HP ENVY Notebook - 15-ah151sa (ENERGY STAR)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi there.

I've had this problem for a while, I've seen it be an issue on other forums, so I'm hoping someone can help me solve this issue.

When I play games on battery power my laptop works completely fine, consistent and high frame rate, however when the power adapter is plugged in the performance completely drops to unplayable territory. 60FPS to the 20s in some cases.

Specifications:

Model name: HP ENVY Notebook - 15-ah151sa (ENERGY STAR)

Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64-Bit

BIOS: F.19

CPU: AMD A-10-8700P Radeoon R6 10 Compute Cores 4C + 6G (4CPUs) - 1.8GHz

GPU:AMD RADEON (TM) R6 GRaphics

RAM: 8192MB

Steps I have taken:

I have checked all power plans, and they are all set to high performance.

I have tested this problem mutliple times, and it is reproducible, the frame rate consistently drops whenever it is plugged in all games. Even old not at all demanding games. I've updated all drivers, through the HP Support Assistant App, did not work.

Other people have suggested a BIOS update, there were no BIOS update needed when going through the support assistant, I manually checked the hp drivers website, and there was a new one that wasn't being detected through the support assistant app. I can't remember the old BIOS version, but it was from 2017, the new one I currently have and downloaded manually through the support website is INSYDE F.19 24/04/2018

Power Adapter:

My power adapter is rated at 45Watts, this was the adapter that was bundled with the laptop when I purchased it, I have a suspicion that HP have wrongly supplied an incorrect power adapter and it requires a higher capacity adapter. I do not know what wattage is safe for my laptop, and what is too high. The charger does work for charging the battery.

If anyone has any info or solution, it would be greatly appreciated. As it stands this machine is unsuable for most of my gaming purposes. THere are other threads on this site, with a similar problem for HP laptops, but they all seem to be about INTEL processors, where as mine is AMD.

Thanks in Advance

Good Day. A warm welcome to the HP community. I reviewed the case regarding issues with the computer. I will be delighted to assist you here.

Here's a video on how to disable the "turbo mode" that causes this issue: Click here

If you aren't able to disable it permanently, use the below steps:

If you are running windows 8 it could be an admin rights problem.

Navigate to this folder:

C:\Program Files (x86)\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static

Find CCC.exe, right click>properties>compatibility tab

Tick the 'run this program as an administrator' option and hit ok.

Do the same thing for MOM.exe

You may have to restart the PC for the changes to take effect, then try disabling overdrive, restart the game to see if it fixes it.
