Hello Tech Experts,
I've a HP Spectre x360 - 13t-ap000 CTO (Product number: 4CJ14AV). And whenever I connect a USB disk on the USB A port, or to the USB-C port, the OS hangs with a blue screen and reboots without a dump file. I'm not able to identify the causes of this problem.
I've performed hardware diagnostics; it completes successfully without any errors or warnings. Do you think whether there could be a short circuit inside the motherboard.
Please assist with any recommendations to identify this unique problem.
Thank you, Anand

Hi @anandnathaniel,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
I understand that your HP Spectre x360 - 13t-ap000 CTO reboots with a blue screen whenever you connect a USB device, and no dump file is generated. You’ve already run hardware diagnostics with no errors, but the issue persists, and you’re concerned it could be a motherboard short circuit. Let’s try narrowing this down:
Update BIOS & Drivers
Go to the HP Support website, enter your product number, and install the latest BIOS, chipset, and USB controller drivers.
Outdated firmware can cause USB-related crashes.
Test with Different Devices & Ports
Try multiple USB drives or peripherals.
If the crash happens with all devices, it points to a port/controller issue. If it only happens with one device, the device itself may be faulty.
Check Event Viewer & Reliability Monitor
Press Win + R → eventvwr.msc → check under Windows Logs → System for any USB or hardware-related errors.
Also open Reliability Monitor (search in Start Menu) for clues on critical events before the crash.
Disable Fast Startup & USB Selective Suspend
Go to Control Panel → Power Options → Advanced Settings and turn off USB selective suspend.
In Power Options → Choose what power buttons do, disable Fast Startup.
Restart and test again.
Run System File Check & Memory Test
Run sfc /scannow in Command Prompt (Admin).
Also run Windows Memory Diagnostic to ensure RAM errors aren’t causing instability.
I hope this helps.
