I am facing issue with Laptop's battery degradation
I purchased my HP laptop(Model - BSoXX) in 2019.  I used the same laptop without changing any part of it for Four years. And then in 2022, I faced problem with laptop speed, as I was using some big software's, So I installed a 118 GB ssd in my laptop.

Then in 2023 I was facing problems with laptops battery. The laptop suddenly shut's down without warning. By time the original battery degraded so much that the laptop shut down even 70-80 % battery is remaining. I purchased a Original battery from a local store in my city.

The new battery also degraded so much within a year only. Thank god that it was within the warranty period. The battery witch I purchased was replaced with a new one. It was maxeleon's battery. The battery was working well for three months. I caliberated the battery after the first installation.  Now I am facing the same problem of automatic shutdown without warning. On checking the battery health report I found that this battery is also degraded by 50 %.  The capacity goes down from 32,120 mwh to 18,192 mwh in just 4 months of use.

My laptop functions well. I also regularly check the window's update and keep it up to date. I also ran the trouble shooter but that doesn't help. I also follow the 40-80% battery charging rule.

Can anyone help me to know what could be the possible reasons of continues battery degradation. And what can i do next to prevent the degradation?

Hi @Jitendra771 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are Facing battery degradation on my HP laptop model 15-bsoxx here are potential causes for the degradation and actionable steps you can take:

Possible Causes of Battery Degradation

  • Low-Quality Battery: Even though you purchased a "genuine" battery, third-party brands like Maxeleon may not offer the same quality as original HP batteries. Their lifespan can be significantly shorter.
  • Overcharging or Deep Discharges: Despite following the 40-80% charging rule, improper calibration or frequent deep discharges might strain the battery.
  • High Power Demand: Adding an SSD may have improved speed, but it can slightly increase power usage if paired with a higher workload.
  • Heat Exposure: Heat from prolonged usage, gaming, or running demanding software can degrade battery cells faster.
  • Faulty Power Delivery or Charger: If your charger is not delivering consistent power, it can stress the battery. Use an original HP charger compatible with your model.
  • Battery Calibration Issues: If calibration wasn’t performed correctly or the battery wasn't used properly after calibration, it could lead to inaccurate capacity readings.
  • Aging Components: A 2019 laptop may have power regulation components (like the DC-in board or motherboard circuitry) that have worn out, causing inefficient charging and battery degradation.

Solutions and Preventive Steps

Buy an Original HP Battery:

  • Purchase directly from HP or an authorized dealer to ensure authenticity and quality. Verify the part number using HP’s website or customer support.

Check the Charger:

  • Ensure you are using an original HP charger designed for your laptop. If unsure, replace it to rule out faulty power delivery.

Optimize Power Usage:

  • Adjust Windows settings to reduce power consumption, like lowering screen brightness, disabling unused hardware (Wi-Fi/Bluetooth when not needed), and closing unnecessary background apps.

Monitor Heat Levels:

  • Clean internal components like fans and vents to ensure proper airflow and prevent overheating.
  • Use a cooling pad to reduce heat impact on the battery.

Proper Charging Habits:

  • Avoid frequent deep discharges (letting the battery drop below 20%).
  • Occasionally allow the battery to charge to 100% and discharge to 10% to recalibrate.

Update Firmware and Drivers:

  • Ensure the BIOS and power management firmware are up-to-date. Visit HP's support website to download the latest versions for your model.

Run HP Diagnostics:

  • Use the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics tool to test the battery and other components. It can help identify if the degradation is related to the battery or another issue.

Consider Power Surge Protection:

  • Use a surge protector to shield your laptop from voltage fluctuations that could harm the battery.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello @Gaya1239,

Thank you so much for for helping me with my query.

I have a couple of questions that I want to ask you
1. In your reply you mentioned that the faulty power delivery or charger can also be a possible cause of battery degradation. I am using the the original charger and not changed it yet. It is the charger which comes with the laptop when I purchased the laptop in 2019. My question is how can I identify if the my charger is not working correctly or is faulty or are there any chances the charger might be warn out. If changing charger might be an option where should I buy it from to ensure its credibility.

2.  Moreover I need to change the battery because the current one is degraded 50 % and currently I am using the laptop directly plug in by charger. can i buy the battery online from hp store?. If possible, It would be great if you can share the direct puchase link of the battery for my laptop.

Thank you once again.
Regards,
