Hello,

I’ve been trying to perform a BIOS update to my HP Omen laptop (Runs Windows 11) via the HP support assistant.

The first time I ran it and restarted my computer I got a screen saying the BIOS update failed, and when I ran the installer again, I got an error message saying that there’s not enough space.

This is the second time it happens to me, so I know by now it’s related to the system EFI partition free space.

Last time I managed to fix this by mounting the EFI partition via diskpart and accidentally deleting more files than I should’ve, but the installer recreated enough files for my BIOS to be saved.

i don’t want to repeat that mistake again, so I thought it would be best to ask you to help me enlarge my EFI partition size, since I am a tech savvy (And a programmer) but I’m not confident enough to do this part on my own, since it’s risky business.

id appreciate it if you could help me.

Thanks in advance!

@orenlevi6,

Many third-party partition management programs offer a feature to enlarge the EFI system partition (ESP) in an easy manner, but you have to buy a pro version for this operation. See this article by MiniTool Partition Wizard.

Best Way to Increase EFI System Partition Size on Windows 11/

You can increase the ESP size manually too. There are many YouTube videos for how to do it.

Basically, they use the same method: first, shrink the C: drive by whatever size you want, then format the space with Fat32 and create a new ESP with the bcdboot command. Finally, you need to delete an original ESP to switch to the new larger ESP.  This is a tricky part because if you delete the working EFI partition and the new ESP doesn't work, then the system doesn't boot into Windows.

This video shows step-by-step instructions for how to resize the ESP.
