My lap top fan makes a very strange sound. It started just every once in a while, but eventually it started doing it more and more and now it's almost constant. It sounds like someone in a car is pressing the gas pedal to the floor with the parking brake engaged and the motor can't turn any faster. No other symptoms. When it started, after a few moments, it would stop and go back to normal with the fans at high speed. Now it's is just non stop.

Hi @jessicaldobson,

Thank you for the response.

I understand your laptop’s fan is making a loud and unusual noise frequently, and it’s now happening almost constantly. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

a. Check for Dust Build-up

Turn off the laptop and unplug it.

Use a can of compressed air to gently blow air through the vents (side, back, and bottom).

Avoid placing the nozzle too close to the vents to prevent moisture buildup.

Dust buildup is one of the most common reasons for fan strain and unusual noise.

b. Inspect Ventilation and Airflow

Make sure the laptop is placed on a hard, flat surface while in use.

Avoid using it on soft surfaces like beds, blankets, or cushions that can block air circulation.

Check if any vents are obstructed or blocked.

c. Check Fan Speed and Performance in BIOS/HP Command Center

Restart your laptop and press Esc or F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS.

Go to the Hardware Monitoring or System Diagnostics section and check if the fan speed is abnormally high or fluctuating.

If your model supports HP Command Center, open it and ensure the thermal profile is set to Balanced or Quiet Mode, not Performance Mode.

d. Update BIOS and Drivers

Open HP Support Assistant (if installed).

Check for updates to BIOS, chipset, and thermal management drivers.

Installing the latest updates can help regulate fan behavior and temperature control.

e. Run System Diagnostics – Fan Test & Thermal Test

Restart the laptop → press Esc → press F2 for Diagnostics.

Run the Component Test → Fan Test to detect mechanical issues.

You can also run a Thermal Test to see if overheating is triggering the fan noise.

f. Check for Overheating or High CPU Usage

Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).

Under the Processes tab, check if any application is using unusually high CPU or GPU resources.

End unnecessary background tasks and check if the fan speed/noise reduces.

g. Reapply Thermal Paste / Inspect Fan (Advanced Step)

If you’re comfortable opening the laptop and it’s out of warranty, you can remove the bottom cover and check if the fan is loose, damaged, or obstructed.

Clean the fan blades carefully with a soft brush or compressed air.

If the thermal paste on the CPU/GPU has dried, reapplying fresh thermal paste can lower temperatures and reduce fan stress.

I hope this helps.
