I sent my laptop for repair as the fan kept overheating and my laptop kept spontaneously shutting down, particularly when I was in the middle of client calls on Google Meets. It came back to me today and is in an even worse state now than when I sent it in for repair - from the moment I switch it on, the fan is in overdrive and even the keyboard is hot within 30 seconds of me switching it back on now. The repair docs claim the fan was replaced but that cannot be right. What the hell.

@Fkoff4, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
Basic Visual & Physical Inspection
Fan noise from boot-up: If the fan is loud immediately, it could point to:
Misinstalled fan
BIOS issue
Faulty thermal sensor
Feel around the exhaust vent: Is air being pushed out? If not, the fan might not be spinning properly (even if it’s making noise).
Check for physical warping or looseness: Especially around the base or keyboard.
Check Windows-Level Resource Usage
Once you’re in Windows:
Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc):
Go to the Performance tab – Check CPU usage and temperature.
If CPU usage is high at idle, check the Processes tab and look for anything abnormal.
Resource Monitor → Detailed view of what's taxing your system.
Update BIOS & Drivers
Go to the official HP support site: HP Laptop 14-ep1016TU (9Z308PA) Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Suppor
Update BIOS to the latest version.
Install the latest Intel chipset and thermal/fan management drivers.
Sometimes fan control is handled via embedded controller firmware + drivers combo.
Run HP Hardware Diagnostics
Restart your laptop.
Tap ESC → Then F2 for HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
Run:
Fan test
System thermal test
CPU stress test
I hope this helps.
Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.
Take care and have a good day.
