HP 17 Laptop PC 17-cp1000 (4V7P1AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I recently bought this laptop new, and right from switching it on for the first time, the fan is often very loud. This isn't all the time - it will speed up periodically, sometimes when a program is being opened, sometimes when nothing particular seems to be happening. I installed SpeedFan and it shows that the fan ramps up to 4,800 rpm quite often, which makes quite a whining sound and is very distracting. SpeedFan also shows that it is Temp1 (whatever that is :-)) that is heating up.  This laptop has a fairly new processor, the Ryzen 7 5825U, and a TDP of 15W so when I ordered it I thought it would be power efficient and run reasonably cool and quiet, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I have installed HP Command Center and set it to Quiet.  The BIOS on this device has no fan speed control options, it only allows you to have the fan always running or not. Processor Power Management in Windows Power Options is set to 80% min 100% max processor state, there are no other options available.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions?

Hello @johnh1967

Fan should be checked/replaced or sensor error (bios/motherboard).

HP warranty valid -> Contact HP Support for service repair

HP warranty expired:

HP spare part number: M50402-001 ( out of stock at HP Partsurfer ! )

Buy this:

M50402-001 M53875-001 GENUINE HP FAN+HEATSINK 17-CN 17-CN0013DX (EH21)

https://www.ebay.com/itm/234607353460

Download -> Maintenance and Service Guide

Page 42 Chapter 5 Removal and replacement procedures for authorized service provider parts

In your case: Service is required !
- The computer should be disassembled and checked.
- Thermal paste for CPU GPU and bridges should be renewed
- The function of the fan(s) must be checked / REPLACE !
- General cleaning ...

If you can't do that, you should have it <serviced> by a professional notebook (chip level) repair store.

Good luck

Okay, thanks for that. The notebook is under warranty, it's only a month old. However, I live in Bolivia and ordered this notebook from the USA (I paid an extra $170 to have it shipped here). How do I proceed now? Do you know if there is there an HP support centre in Bolivia?

Thanks for those links. I checked my warranty, and it is valid (for another 11 months in fact). I went to the Service Center page and raised a ticket that referred to this thread for more details. A few hours later, I received an email saying that the case had been closed: "Su caso ha sido cerrado. Tenga en cuenta que, si se le envían materiales, esta notificación confirma que estos materiales se han solicitados". I raised another ticket saying that I didn't quite understand the response to the first one and asking for it be reviewed. The same thing happened - case closed with the same message. There is no other option on the website for contacting HP Bolivia - no phone number, no email, nothing, just the function to raise a ticket.

Do you have suggestions on how I should proceed now?

Many thanks for your help.
