Hello,
I have an issue with my computer, an HP ENVY Laptop 15-ep0xxx.
Configuration
Processor: i7-10750H
Graphics card: RTX 2060
RAM: 32GB
Storage: 2TB SSD.
Since yesterday, I’ve been getting a 90b error on startup. It's not that they aren’t working, but rather that my right fan runs at full speed nonstop.
I already know that my fan works perfectly because I swapped their positions. I moved the right fan to the left side, and the system automatically adjusts the speed, making the left fan (now in the right position) run at full speed instead.
Do you have any idea what the problem might be?
Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi @JohnnyAR,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like the issue you're experiencing with the right fan running at full speed could be related to a hardware or firmware problem, as you've already confirmed the fans are functional by swapping their positions.
Here are some possible causes and steps to resolve it:
Fan Control Software or BIOS Settings
- Fan Control Settings: Check if there is any software like HP Command Center or third-party fan control software that might be controlling the fan speed. Sometimes, these can get stuck in a high-performance mode, causing one fan to run at full speed.
- BIOS Update or Reset: A corrupt BIOS or incorrect fan settings could be causing this issue. Try resetting the BIOS to default settings by:
- Restarting your laptop and pressing the appropriate key (usually F10) to enter the BIOS setup.
- Restoring defaults (usually an option like "Restore Defaults" or "Load Setup Defaults").
- Checking if the fans are listed and their settings seem correct.
Faulty Temperature Sensor or Fan Control Circuit
- Since you mentioned that swapping the fans causes the opposite fan to run at full speed, it might indicate an issue with the temperature sensors or the fan control circuitry. The laptop could be reading the temperature incorrectly or there could be a short or miscommunication in the control system.
- Overheating: Ensure your laptop's cooling system (fans and heatsinks) is free of dust or obstructions. High temperatures can cause one fan to run at full speed as the system tries to cool down the CPU or GPU.
Error Code 90B
- 90B Error Code: This error is typically related to thermal or hardware problems, often associated with a cooling system malfunction or a sensor issue. It's worth checking if the error is being triggered due to faulty hardware or an issue in thermal management. Sometimes, the error can cause one fan to spin at full speed to try and compensate for a thermal issue.
Driver or Firmware Issues
- Driver Update: Ensure your system's chipset, thermal, and GPU drivers are up to date. Sometimes, outdated drivers can cause improper fan speed regulation.
- Firmware (EC or Embedded Controller) Update: Sometimes, fan behavior is controlled by firmware that manages thermal profiles. Check the HP website for any firmware updates for your specific laptop model.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
