My HP Pavilion 14 ec0013au laptop is having issues with its fan. I initially noticed it was noisy, especially when the laptop wasn't on a flat/stable surface. Then, when I opened the back cover, the fan was spinning in the wrong direction. I believe the fan is supposed to pulls air from the bottom and exhaust it through the hinge (under the monitor), but now the fan is pulls air from the hinge and exhausting it through the bottom.
I've now purchased a new fan, and it's quieter, but it's still spinning in the wrong direction.

Or am I mistaken?
If not, what should I do? Thank you14-EC TPN-Q24414-EC TPN-Q244

Hi @mas_keswo,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand your concern about the fan behavior and noise on your HP Pavilion 14-ec0013au, especially after opening the unit and even replacing the fan. I appreciate the detailed observations you shared, that helps a lot.

Let me clarify how the cooling system in this model is designed to work.

How the Cooling System Normally Works

In Pavilion 14 series laptops:

  • Cool air is typically drawn in through the bottom intake vents
  • Warm air is then pushed out through the rear/hinge exhaust vent
  • The fan blade shape and shroud design determine airflow; the visible spin direction alone can sometimes appear misleading when viewed from different angles

Because of the fan blade curvature, it may look like the airflow is reversed when visually inspected, even though the airflow is correct.

A simple way to confirm airflow direction:

  • Hold a small strip of tissue near the bottom vents → it should gently pull inward
  • Hold it near the rear hinge vent → you should feel warm air blowing outward

About Noise Changes Based on Surface

What you described earlier, louder noise when the laptop is not on a flat surface, is a known behavior:

  • Soft or uneven surfaces partially block intake vents
  • The fan ramps up, and turbulence noise increases
  • Internal temperatures rise faster, triggering higher RPM

Using the laptop on a firm, flat surface allows smooth airflow and quieter operation.

Since You Replaced the Fan

If both the original and replacement fan appear to behave the same way, that strongly suggests:

  • Airflow direction is likely correct
  • The system control is functioning normally
  • No firmware setting can reverse fan direction; this is not software-controlled

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
