Hi, I've noticed at least one of the fans in my laptop is running constantly no matter what the CPU load is or power plan. Ideally under minimal load and power saver mode I'd like the fans to be completely silent.

I know this is possible because if I reflash the BIOS and set it to anything other than High Performance mode, all the fans are competely silent under low load and CPU temps stay in a reasonable range. However after a few days (possibly related to the laptop being put to sleep?), or a session of high load (eg gaming), the fans get 'stuck' on, and no number of restarts or power plan changes will get them to turn off again. The only solution I can find is to refash the BIOS again, which obviously I'd rather not be doing.

This is an issue I've had with the laptop since it was brand new when I first bought it a few months ago, so I'm confident it's not to do with dust in the fans etc. but more likely a software issue. I already have the 'Fan always on' setting Disabled in the BIOS but maybe it's possible this isn't working?

Any helps would be great,

Isaac

Hi! @Isaac-S, Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!

I understand fan on your laptop keeps running all the time.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any hardware or software changes on your PC?

To keep the laptop from overheating and damaging components on your PC the fan should keep on running.

However, if you hear the fan on your laptop is noisy try the steps recommended below.

Try updating BIOS and chipset drivers on your PC and check if it helps.

Please update the BIOS using this link.

Also, update the chipset drivers using this link.

Prevent software from starting when the computer is started.
Close software programs when you are done using them.
Log off the Internet when you are not actively browsing the Internet.
If your computer gets hot when playing games, try playing the game at a lower resolution and with decreased graphics settings.

Refer this article to further troubleshoot fan issues with your PC.

Let me know if this works!

Have a great day! 🙂

Hi, I've not made any hardware changes to the laptop and most software changes were made after I noticed this (as mentioned, this has happened since I've ownwed the laptop), possibly an early Windows Update is the only thing I can think of.

I understand that the fan is required to stop the laptop overheating, but the laptop is more than capable of running at low power with just passive airflow to keep it cool. I reflashed the BIOS again earlier today and am currently typing this with 0 audible noise from the laptop (after the HDD spins down). CPU temps are currently sitting at a stable ~42 degrees C. The fans are only kicking in under higher workloads right now. But I know in a day or two they will start up again for good and never return to this 'quiet state'.

Thank you for the links, I will try that new BIOS update and install those Intel Chipset drivers and get back soon if it works.

@Isaac-S, Thanks for your quick response and time.

I appreciate your efforts for getting back to us.

As you mentioned the fan run very loud without any running any applications.

Try updating the BIOS and chipset drivers from the previous thread and check if it helps.

If the issue still persists after trying out the steps try running a system diagnostics on your PC and check if the hardware components on your PC are functioning correctly.

Refer this article to know more information about running system diagnostics on your PC.

Hope this helps!

Have a pleasant day ahead! 🙂

Hi - I'm replying to this old thread because this particular problem was driving me nuts, until I stumbled upon the solution (in my case) so hoping this may help others:

Try pressing Fn+F and waiting about 30 seconds.

Apparently Fn+F toggles 'fans on maximum speed' setting.

Related to this, other obscure key shortcuts that you probably pressed by accident and may drive you crazy:

fn + r Turns the touchpad off and on.
fn + t Turns the touch screen features off and on.
