I just purchased a new Envy 2 in 1 laptop. When I connect my Seagate external drive for backup purposes I get a message that there are 4 files that are read only,oobe1.txt,sub1.txt,oobe4.txt,sub4.txt. They are the hp bridge directory. How can I correct this so I don't always get the error message?

Hi @Ken396,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your laptop!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
It's recommended that you format any storage device before you begin using it for the first time using the preferred format, I would suggest you do the same, for more details on how to format your drive, you can check this link from seagate: https://www.seagate.com/in/en/support/kb/how-to-format-your-hard-drive-220151en/#:~:text=Newer%20Sea... (This site isn't owned by HP, I'm simply sharing it here to help you out)

I tried reformatting the Seagate drive, and I still get an error when I power on the laptop that windows cant access the disk. The backup still seems to run, but there an error that 4 files weren't backed up.

Hi @Ken396
Thank you for the response.
It looks like Windows is flagging those four read-only files from the HP Bridge Directory as unbackable during the backup process. Since you've already tried reformatting the Seagate drive, here are a few ways to fix or bypass this issue:
Try these steps:
Take Ownership of the Files
- Right-click the file → Select Properties.
- Go to the Security tab → Click Advanced.
- Click Change next to "Owner".
- Type your Windows username and click Check Names.
- Click OK → Apply.
- Now, edit permissions and give Full Control to your user.
Exclude These Files from the Backup
If the files aren't important, you can tell Windows Backup to skip them:
- Open Control Panel → Backup and Restore.
- Click Change settings.
- When asked What do you want to back up?, choose Let me choose.
- Find and uncheck the HP Bridge folder.
- Click Next and Save settings.
Try Running Backup in Safe Mode
Some system files are protected during normal operation:
- Restart your laptop and press F8 (or Shift + Restart → Advanced Options → Startup Settings).
- Select Safe Mode with Networking.
- Try running the backup again.
Let me know how it goes.
