I had unchecked the "allow the computer to turn off this devicer to save power" a week ago, and it didn't fix it. I did the credential thing, and it works flawlessly [at least for the last 5-6 times i've come out of "sleep"].
I'm curious, so I'm re-checking the "allow the computer to turn off this devicer to save power" box.
The other thing i did to the credential service was turn it to "automatic". I may have switched it to "manual" while fine tuning my services months ago. I'm not sure what the default win7 home premium setting is for that service. but now that i'm letting the computer turn it off, we'll see what happens. My assumption is that if i wake the computer with the keyboard or opening the lid, then the Validity Sensors should wake up at that time anyway. But I'll let you know what happens in my lastest configuration.

I've not had any problems either. But as far as i can tell, I've got my settings back to what they were. What fixed my problem was terminating the "Credential Manager" service, and restarting it.
Current config:
"Credential Manager" service set to "Manual" status
in Device Manager/ Biometric Devices / Validity Sensors: Properties under Power Managment tab, the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" box is checked.
I believe you've unchecked the power managment box. But I've been fine this entire time as well. Go figure!?!?

So here's the solution(s) as found by Pokey and me:
Option 1: Computer, Properties, Device Manager, Biometric Devices, Validity Sensors, Properties, and the Power Management tab, Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."
Option 2: Try disabling and enabling the "Credential Manager" service by going into Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, Credentials Manager. Even though the Credentials Manager status is “Started,” stop the Credentials Manager service and restart it. Find more information here: https://support.authentec.com/Forum/tabid/318/forumid/49/threadid/600/scope/posts/Default.aspx
Option 3: Do both.

I haven't had any problems lately loging in to windows.
But Chase.com wouldn't be recognized as a login page (they changed their homepage), so it didn't give me the option of using the fingerprint reader. It was only a problem in IE. There was an HP Simple Pass toolbar present in IE, and one option was to report problems. So I tried this option, but it told me Simple Pass was out of date. I checked HP's website, and it only had a version back in April 2012, and that was what my laptop had installed already. But the page that said i was out of date took me straight to Authentec's website with a newer version of Simple Pass.
So I thought I'd share to the link to get version 6.x of HP Simple Pass

Thanks for the update.
Have you tried it yet? Any problems?
BTW, I still have had absolutely no problems with the reader since turning off the power management on it. I assume you have been running strong as well as a result of your option.

I've not had any problems with the reader since restarting the service mentioned earlier in this thread. And my power management box is still checked (allowing the computer to turn the reader off to save power).
The new software did recognize the Chase.com homepage and allowed me to use my fingerprint to login using Internet Explorer. But the toolbar in IE disappeared. So i don't have the easy option to report problems. There is likely another way if the need arises. There is still one site that it won't recognize as a login site. But I can deal with that.

Problem with rebooting is that I have open accounting programs, open spreadsheets.
I discovered a fix by accident after trying to type in the password manually and getting it wrong a few times. The fingerprint scanner light came back on.
