HP Spectre 15-Df0068nr (Late 2018 Model) 8565U, MX150
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The fingerprint scanner used to work when the laptop was asleep - it would automatically wake up the computer and login when I placed my fingerprint on it. It no longer does this. I have to manually wake it up and then sign-in with fingerprint reader. Additionally, when the computer is asleep for an extended period of time (e.g. overnight) the fingerprint scanner doesn't work at all, even when I manually wake it up from sleep. Hybernation is off.

This may be related to my problem of the Wifi not working out of sleep (shows error icon - exclammation mark) -- connected to the network but "no internet access". I have to disconnect and reconnect to the network. I made a separate thread about it, but the issue is still unresolved:

I wanted to fiddle around with the advanced power options but a lot of the options are missing.  I only have the following: Desktop background settings, Sleep, Power buttons and lid, Display, and Battery. Multimedia settings? Processor power management? Intel Graphics Settings? USB settings? etc.? How do I get these settings back? [I was able to get the "Wireless Adapter Settings" back by running a script for registry editing found on the WindowsTen forum.

I found this website and am working through some of the suggestions. Hopefully it solves the issue.

[EDIT: as it turns out this didn't solve the problem so I'm deleting it]

I spoke too soon. The fingerprint scanner stopped working again even when the device was only asleep for a few minutes. It works intermittently.

@nosauce1,

Thank you for showing your interest in HP Support Forums. It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel.  I see from your post you are having issues with the fingerprint reader not working on your HP notebook. Don't worry we'll work together to help you find a solution.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

Have you recently made any software or hardware changes before the issue started?

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

Perform a Hard reset on the notebook

Many startup errors and other problems can be resolved by decreasing the amount of power stored in hardware components. Decreasing stored power is sometimes referred to as a "Hard Reset". Use the following steps to perform a hard reset on a computer:

1. If Windows is open, click Start and then Shutdown.

If Windows is not open and the computer has power, press and hold the power button on the computer until the computer shuts off.

2. With the power off, disconnect the power cord from the back of the computer.

3. With the power off and the power cord disconnected, press the power button on the computer for 5 seconds. The power light indicator on or near the power button might turn on briefly but then go out.

4. Reconnect the power cord and turn on the power.

Next thing, I would suggest here is to Run Windows Updates troubleshooter -

Download and install the troubleshooter from this link.

Now try to perform Windows Updates -

1) In the search box, type and open Windows Updates.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

If the issue persists, I would suggest here is to uninstall the fingerprint reader software:

Step 1: Uninstall the Fingerprint reader software.
Click on Ask Me Anything box beside the Start button.
Type Device Manager and open device manager from the search results.
Under the Biometric category, right-click on anything which is listed and select Uninstall.
Step 2: Restart the PC.
Step 3: Please download the latest Fingerprint reader software from this link.
Step 4: Install the software and configure your fingerprint.

Install the latest printer fingerprint drivers from this link.

Alternatively, I would suggest here is to update the Bios and Chipset drivers either from our HP support website, using this link or download it using HP Support Assistant.

To download and install HP support assistant on your PC. It should automatically download and install the latest updates and drivers for your PC.

Refer this link to know how to use HP support assistant.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Eagerly waiting for your response!

that said, If the information I've provided was helpful,

give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck.

The problem went away after trying a bunch of things. I have no idea what fixed it.

I enabled Windows Hello facial recognition so I no longer use the fingerprint scanner. It's really fast and efficient but sometimes it tries to find my face when I want the computer to go to sleep.

Thank you for your help!
