On my laptop I have hp inc. - firmware 15.34.0.0 that will not download with this message: "Plug in your device to continue installing this update". In addition to this: the battery is showing 0% and not charging and turning the computer on with the power button doesn't always work the first time. I've removed the battery drivers and reinstalled them with no change. Here is the battery report

Hi @llhamble,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with both a firmware update issue and a charging/battery problem on your HP Laptop 15-ef2xxx. Here's a breakdown of the issues and some steps you can try.
Firmware Update Issue: "Plug in your device to continue installing this update"
The firmware update is likely checking for the battery status and is not proceeding because your laptop’s battery shows 0% and isn’t charging. This could be tied to your power/battery issues.
Potential Fixes:
- Check Power Adapter & Charging Port: Ensure that your power adapter is working properly by trying a different charger or plugging the laptop into a different outlet. Inspect the charging port for any visible damage.
- Reset the Laptop (Hard Reset): Sometimes a hard reset can help resolve firmware or charging issues. Disconnect the charger, remove the battery (if possible), press and hold the power button for about 15-20 seconds, reconnect the battery/charger, and try powering it on.
- Update BIOS: You mentioned your BIOS version is F.31 from August 2023. Check HP's support website for any newer BIOS updates or reapply the current BIOS update, as an issue with the BIOS could be affecting your power management.
- Try Updating the Firmware via HP Support Assistant: If the standalone installer isn’t working, try using HP Support Assistant to manage updates, as it may bypass the issue.
Battery Issue: 0% Charge and Not Charging
- Battery Driver Reinstallation: You’ve already reinstalled the drivers. Another thing to try is to boot into Safe Mode and uninstall the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" from Device Manager. Restart and let Windows reinstall the drivers again.
- Battery Health: The battery report shows that the full charge capacity is still at the design capacity (41,050 mWh), which suggests the battery itself might be OK, but it’s not charging. This could indicate a hardware issue, possibly with the charging circuit or the power adapter.
Additional Steps:
- Check the AC Adapter and Battery Health through HP Diagnostics:
- Restart the laptop and press F2 during startup to enter the HP Diagnostics tool. Run the battery and AC adapter test to see if there’s a hardware issue.
- Calibrate the Battery:
- Charge the laptop to 100% (if it ever starts charging again).
- Disconnect the charger and let it drain completely until it shuts down.
- Charge it back to 100% again without interruption.
- Test with a Different Charger or Battery: If you have access to another charger or battery, test them to see if the issue lies with the current hardware.

Power Button Not Always Working
- This could be related to the battery or firmware issue, but if the power button issue persists, there may be a hardware issue with the button itself.
- If it continues to be unresponsive, consider reaching out to HP support for a hardware repair, especially if the laptop is under warranty.
Next Steps:
- Fix charging issues by testing a different charger or running HP Diagnostics.
- Complete the firmware update after resolving the charging issue to ensure the laptop's stability.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Following up on your suggested fixes:
- Check power adaptors and charging port - I did not mention this earlier but this was the first step I had taken hoping it was just a bad charger but not the case.
- Hard reset - completed and no change, problems still persist
- Update BIOS - updated to F.34 7/29/2024 even though the download states it's F.34 rev A 8/19/2024...odd
- Update firmware via HP Support Assistant - same issue, will not update unless plugged in
- Battery driver reinstallation - I had attempted this the other day, and they did reinstall, but problems still persist
- Run HP diagnostics - I just ran all the hardware diagnostics and not surprised that there were several fails:
- Battery Check fail bad cell (40)
- Charging port test fail
Since this laptop is not a year old yet I would guess it is still under warranty. Is there a way to get a battery replacement?
Thank you so much for responding.
