HPSpectre13 aw0000 x360 convertible
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My HP Spectre13 aw0000 x360 convertible was purchased in December  2019 and the warranty expired December 2020. It stopped working barely 4 months after purchase and went into repeated loops of "preparing for automatic repairs" and bitlocker recovery settings.

The HP repair outlet I took it to firstly diagnosed a need for an OS reload which I was made to pay even though the system's warranty was still active as when I dropped it for repairs. Then after about 2 weeks of waiting, I am told that the motherboard is bad and need to be replaced for about $700, for which I being told to pay or have my disfunctional system returned.

I feel terribly dissappointed but would appreciate any help towards having this issue resolved.

Try doing an OS reload on your own. It's not hard, just download the Windows Media Creation tool on another computer and use it to put Windows on a USB stick. After that, boot into the BIOS on the laptop and boot from the USB stick.

If that doesn't work, try replacing the hard drive, then do the above.

Thanks,

Hi Alex,

I did take it to a HP support centre here in Lagos, Nigeria. They actually suggested the OS reload but eventually returned to request a change of motherboard.

I am tempted to believe thier diagnosis but it still doesnt sit well with me moreso since the system was was breathing fine and all hardware test proved ok prio to taking it to them.

Many thanks

I really doubt the motherboard needs replacing unless it's had a bad drop or has been overheating badly over some time. An OS reload, done on your own and not by the support center, should do the trick.

Instructions:

  1. Download the Windows Media Creation Tool here onto a separate computer: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=691209
  2. Make sure you have a empty USB stick plugged into the computer you downloaded the tool onto. This USB will be wiped.
  3. Run the tool and write Windows on the USB stick.
  4. When the tool finishes, take out the USB and plug it into your laptop.
  5. Boot up the laptop, repeatedly pressing the Esc key.
  6. When the Startup Menu shows up, press the F9 key.
  7. Use the arrow keys to select the device that looks like your USB drive, then press enter.
  8. Follow the instructions on-screen.

Hope this helps!
