HP Recommended

Does the power supply for G4 Thunderbolt Dock 120W have to be an HP one? I bought a used dock and tried a Dell equivalent Volt/Amps/Watts power supply but the unit shows a power light and starts the fan for just a second then stops. I need to know if the unit is faulty or if only HP power supply is allowed? (i saw an indication in a post on another forum that this might be the case)
