Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Did this happen after a recent window or software update?
  • Have you made any hardware/software changes?
  • Does system boots to the windows desktop?
  • Are you getting cooling fan error 90B?

One of the possibilities may be that the fan needs to be cleaned. I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

Firstly, let's perform BIOS Update: Follow steps from the link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c00042629  If the issue persists continue next step: Changing the System Power Scheme to Balance in the BIOS.

1. Turn on or restart the computer.

2. Press F10 to enter the BIOS Setup.

3.Select System Configuration.

4. Select Boot Options > System Power Scheme.

5. Change the option to Balance.

6.Select F10 to Save and Exit the BIOS.

7.Select Exit.

If the issue persists use the following steps:

  1. Press Enter to clear the message and allow the system to boot to the Windows Desktop.
  2. Shut down the computer, and then inspect and clean the exterior vents to remove dust buildup by blowing air through the vent openings. Dust can accumulate inside the vent openings and around internal cooling components, preventing the removal of heat.

For more information on reducing heat inside your computer, see Reducing Heat Inside the PC.

  1. After you remove the dust, turn on the computer. If the error message persists, continue with these steps.
  2. Perform a hard reset. Performing a hard reset can reset recorded thermal values in memory and enable you to use the computer again, even if only for a short time to access and save any important files before service.

For more information on performing a hard reset, see Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues.

@ECHO_LAKE, thank you for getting back to me,

I have just tried step 1, in the bios on selecting system configuration, there was no option for balance, I noticed however that the 'fan always on' was checked, I have attempted unchecking it, saving and restarting, however, the fan continues to stay on. I have also attempted to clean the fan, by vacuuming the fan/ventilation areas etv. So far nothing has worked,

Also windows download has been on %36 for days, I'm not sure? Other programs seem to downloadseem fine. Kind regards

This sounds like a hardware related issue,

I would request you to reach out to our Support and our Support Engineers should be able to check the available service options in order to diagnose the computer physically. HP Support can be reached by clicking on the following link:  www.hp.com/contacthp/

Okay, many thanks,

Let me say, I played with the settings and the update download has completed and is now installing. I also noticed that the fan did switch off or run much slower for a while. I'm thinking there has been some improvement although most of the time it continues to spin between fast and medium speed. Maybe when I refit the keyboard the cool air will be more effective in cooling down the motherboard etc.

Thank u

Thank you for posting back.

To get the answer to this question, there is no way to control your fan speed on an HP laptop at all. The onboard fan is system managed and it's not possible to change the fan speed settings.

What you can try to do is to go to power options-change advanced power settings-processor power management-maximum processor state and lower it to avoid overheating.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
