g70t-200
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I have a g70t-200 laptop.  I can't find the hardware specs for it on the HP website, but I was able to find a few upgrade suggestions from other sites.  The laptop is older but still in good shape.  64bit OS.  I want to upgrade RAM to make it faster.  it currently has 3GB of RAM.  Everything I read says 4GB is the limit.  Is that true and if so, what limits it to 4GB?  Is it the motherboard or something else?  Thanks in advance.

It is a CTO (Configure To Order) machine therefore we can't find its specs. You can only find its specs on your invoice. Now, you can use the following ways to find out

               https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-g70-200-notebook-pc-series/3837664/model/3878212/document/c0...

Since it is too old, HP does not keep Maintenance and Service Guide for it, only

          https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-g70-200-notebook-pc-series/3837664/model/3878212/manuals

From my research, it uses 4GB max DDR2 RAM. Max RAM for each machine is determined by 3 main factors:

  • 32 or 64 bit CPU : 32 bit CPU can't access to anything above 4GB.
  • RAM limit of operating system: 32 bit OS can't access to anything above 4GB.
  • RAM limit of motherboard

You can install Windows 7 (64 bit) that means it passes the first two BUT may not pass the last factor. You can use CPU-Z to check current RAM specs on your machine to buy more RAM for it (throw away 1GB and buy 2GB). New version of CPU-Z
