I have had nothing but problems with this computer. Windows 11 routinely would hang when opening folders. I frequently experienced lag while in Windows Explorer. The gpu overheated when my daughter played Roblox for 5 minutes creating an intermittent flicker that went away after the laptop cooled down. That was when the laptop was 3.5 months old. Now the laptop is 10 months old. I was experiencing extreme lag last week. Hours later the gpu failed completely. I have found others experiencing the same lagging issues, and suspect others have encountered gpu failure. The laptop has very poor ventilation, and is prone to overheating. It is obvious to me that this model has an inherent design flaw creating these issues.

Hi @Dave4230
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
I'm sorry to hear about the persistent challenges you've had with your HP Pavilion Plus 16-inch laptop. I can understand how frustrating it must be when devices fail to perform as expected, especially when dealing with issues like lag, overheating, and GPU failure.
Here are some detailed troubleshooting steps that might help address these concerns:
1. Check GPU and System Temperatures
- Monitor temperatures: Use software like HWMonitor or CoreTemp to check the GPU and CPU temperatures during usage.
- Ensure proper ventilation: Make sure the vents and fans are clean and unobstructed. Dust accumulation can restrict airflow and lead to overheating.
- Cooling pad: Consider using a laptop cooling pad to improve heat dissipation, especially during activities like gaming.
2. Update GPU Drivers
- Visit HP's support page for your laptop and download the latest graphics drivers.
- Alternatively, check the GPU manufacturer's website (e.g., NVIDIA or AMD) for driver updates specific to your GPU model.
- Perform a clean installation of the driver:
- Uninstall the current driver via Device Manager.
- Restart your laptop.
- Install the updated driver and restart again.
3. Adjust Power and Performance Settings
- Change power plan: Go to Settings > System > Power & Sleep > Additional Power Settings. Select the High Performance power plan.
- Disable power-saving features: In the Advanced Power Options menu, adjust Processor Power Management and Graphics Power Settings to maximize performance.
- Enable Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling in your GPU settings for better performance.
4. Ensure Windows is Updated
- Check for Windows updates:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and ensure your system is fully updated.
- Sometimes, these updates include fixes for performance and compatibility issues.
5. Test for Background Processes and Malware
- Optimize startup programs: Open Task Manager and disable unnecessary apps under the Startup tab.
- Check background apps: Monitor CPU and GPU usage under Task Manager > Performance during heavy workloads.
- Run a full system scan using Windows Defender or trusted antivirus software to rule out any malware affecting system performance.
6. Adjust Game Settings
- For Roblox and other games, reduce graphics settings to lower levels to minimize GPU load.
- Ensure the game is running on the dedicated GPU rather than integrated graphics, which can be checked in the graphics settings or Windows' display settings.
7. Perform Hardware Diagnostics
- Restart your laptop and press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
- Select F2 (System Diagnostics) and run full hardware tests, especially for the GPU and CPU.
- This can help identify specific hardware issues causing the lag and overheating.
8. Consider BIOS Updates
- Check HP's support page for your laptop model for any BIOS updates.
- Install the latest version to ensure compatibility and optimize performance.
9. Test Cooling System
- If overheating persists, consider inspecting the internal cooling system:
- Verify the thermal paste on the GPU and CPU is still effective.
- If you're comfortable, reapply thermal paste or consult a technician.
If you've already tried these steps and the issues persist, it might indicate a deeper hardware fault. I truly empathize with the difficulties you're facing and hope that these troubleshooting measures provide some relief. Let me know how it goes or if you'd like further assistance in implementing any of the steps! 😊

As I said in my original post, the GPU has failed completely. It took three days for HP to provide my with a box and shipping label. It took 5 days for the returned laptop to travel 235 miles to the repair facility. I have been left without a working laptop for over two weeks now. My request for a loaner laptop has been denied. I have been forced to purchase another laptop (certainly not an HP product) while I wait for HP's dysfunctional warranty repair process to be completed. This has been one of the worst customer service experiences I have had in a long while, and definitely the worst computer customer experience ever. HP is a terribly organized and run company.
