Spectre x360 15" (gem cut)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

For some unknown reason, despite working all right just a few hours ago, my 15-inch Spectre now refuses to charge my cell phone via either of the USB-C ports. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Thunderbolt drivers, which has not solved the problem. This phone has no problem charging via USB-C on any other device I own, including  MacBook Pro USB-C charger, and the Spectre itself will read the phone (that is, it recognizes it when it's plugged in), but won't charge it. Any advice as to how to solve this would be greatly appreciated; I'm traveling with only my laptop and USB-C to USB-C cable to charge my phone, and its complete failure to charge is going to pose a major problem.

Interesting.

I own a Galaxy s8 and have an HP Spectre x360 15-ch000 CTO notebook as my current Hp product loan device.

I have always used the USB 3.1 Type-A to USB Type-C cable the charger was delivered with to charge my phone.

It unplugs from the charger for mobile use.

That is the type of cable that is recommended as the best fast charge cable.

Using a USB Type-C to Type-C cable sounds like a limitation to me.

I hope you did bring your Samsung charger with you.

When I travel I always bring the charger to give myself two options for charging.

With all due respect, that's not a very helpful answer. These two USB-C ports are specified as having power delivery capabilities. They comprise 2/3 of the available USB ports on the machine. They've even previously charged this same phone with no issues (on an earlier day in the very same trip during which I posted, in fact). Saying, essentially, "Oh, well, that's what you get for using a USB-C to USB-C cable," ignores the main issue, which is that this shouldn't be a limiting factor. These ports are designed to charge a cell phone or other digital device via USB-C. So why aren't they? The laptop has never been dropped or otherwise mishandled, all of the required updates have happened as necessary, the phone will charge via USB-C just fine using an Apple USB-C charger designed for their MacBook line, and there's no obvious reason why it shouldn't also work on this laptop, which was part of the reason that I bought it.

I don't really see why I should just shrug and say, "Oh, well, I guess neither of these ports, which HP adverises as useful for charging devices, are actually functional for that. No big deal!" when that's not how the laptop is supposed to function. These ports are supposed to provide power delivery. They don't. I need to figure out what's causing this issue (and, if it's a hardware thing, how to get the laptop repaired), not how to avoid using two of the three ports on my brand new machine.

@NerfHerder909,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Have you tested other devices on the USB port?

Meanwhile, I recommend you update the BIOS and the chipset driver from the below link and check if it helps.

https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers

If you continue facing the issue, I recommend you perform a system restore back to the date when the USB port was working fine.

Follow the steps in the below article to perform a system restore.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!
