I opened my HP laptop for cleaning yesterday, and disconnected the battery. After cleaning, I connected the battery back to the mobo and started the laptop. The battery was constantly stuck at 29%, and whenever I plugged in the charger, it wouldn't change, but whenever I plugged it out, it gives a green screen error saying 'CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED(0xEF)'. Later when I again opened up the laptop and reconnected the battery, the indicator is working fine. But I'm still getting the green screen whenever I unplug it, and it is also overheating as soon as it starts (83°C to 90°C) while nothing is running in the background. Specs - AMD Ryzen 5 5500u with and radeon(hd) graphics 8 gigs ram I even installed the amd radeon adrenalin software to update the drivers, still the error is popping up .

It sounds like you're dealing with a complex issue involving hardware and software interactions on your laptop. Let's break down the troubleshooting steps you've outlined and provide some additional context and guidance.

Perform a Hard Reset / BIOS Power Drain

Since the battery was removed, this may have caused some residual BIOS/power controller confusion.

  • Shut down the laptop completely.
  • Unplug the charger.
  • Hold the power button for 30 seconds to drain static/power.
  • Plug in the charger (but don’t turn it on yet).
  • Now power on and enter BIOS (Esc or F10 on boot).
  • Wait 30 seconds, then exit without changes.

This can reset EC (Embedded Controller) logic, especially after internal disassembly.

Check Battery Status & ACPI Driver

Your crash on charger unplug suggests a broken link between the battery ACPI controller and Windows kernel.

  • Press Win + X → Device Manager
  • Expand Batteries
    Right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method BatteryUninstall device 
    Do not remove the driver.
  • Expand System devices
    Look for ACPI-related entries and ensure none show a yellow exclamation mark. 
  • Now reboot the system (it will reinstall the battery driver).

Reset AMD Radeon Software + Use Official Drivers

Adrenalin software can sometimes misconfigure power settings. Do this:

  • Go to Add/Remove Programs → uninstall AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition
  • Download the official graphics driver from HP’s support page for your model (not AMD.com).
  • Install it cleanly.
  • Optional but ideal: Use AMD Cleanup Utility before reinstalling.

Check Power Plan & Kernel Settings

Your system might be mismanaging power states.

  • Go to Control Panel → Power Options
  • Select Balanced (not Power Saver or High Performance).
  • Click Change plan settings → Change advanced power settings 
    Under Processor power management, set: 
    Minimum processor state: 5% 
    Maximum processor state: 85% (temporarily to control overheating)
  • Under Battery → Critical battery action, make sure it’s set to Hibernate, not Shutdown.

Thermal Monitoring & Throttle Check

You mentioned 83–90°C on idle — not normal at all.

Use HWInfo64 or CoreTemp to verify:

  • CPU package temps
  • GPU temps
  • Fan RPMs (if available)

If fan speed is low or stuck: Re-check internal fan connection or consider flashing the BIOS again (using HP Support Assistant or HP's BIOS update utility).
 

Windows System File Check

A corrupt kernel file from a bad shutdown or failed driver install can cause the CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED error.

Open Command Prompt (Admin) and run:

sfc /scannow
 

Also:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
 

Update BIOS and Chipset

HP laptops with Ryzen CPUs rely heavily on BIOS and AMD chipset drivers for battery and thermal management.

Go to HP Support → Enter your laptop’s model → Download latest:

  • BIOS
  • AMD chipset driver
  • HP System Event Utility (helps with function keys and thermal management)
