Hi @pikus,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd like to help!
The backspace key not working issue can be both software and hardware related. There’s only so much you can do at the software end before considering that the problem is adjacent hardware, and you most likely have to opt for a new keyboard. That said, let’s check out a few workarounds to fix the backspace key not working in Windows 11.
1. Restart the Computer
If your keyboard’s backspace key stops working, you should restart your computer. If the problem is caused due to minor keyboard software glitch or driver bug, or any temporary problem, restarting the PC will get it running again. After restarting the computer try using the keyboard, especially the backspace key, to check if it is working.
2. Turn Off Sticky Keys and Filter Keys
If restarting the computer doesn’t work, it is time for troubleshooting. Let’s start with turning off the Sticky keys and Filter keys. These are two essential keyboard functions. The Sticky Keys make it possible to use one key at a time, helping with keyboard shortcuts.
The Filter Keys help the system ignore repeated keystrokes and change keyboard repeat rates. If both of these functions are enabled, they could conflict and interrupt the functionality of the keyboard key, including backspace, so you need to consider disabling these key functions from the system settings.
1. Press the Win + I keys on the keyboard to launch Windows Settings.
2. Select Accessibility and scroll down.
3. Click the Keyboard tile.
4. Disable both the Sticky keys and Filter keys options.
After disabling these functions, restart your computer. Check if the backspace key is working.
3. Run the Keyboard Troubleshooter
Microsoft has added numerous troubleshooter programs to Windows, and there’s one for keyboard issues too. It is a useful addition that can help you here. The troubleshooter program locates and fixes the problem. Here’s how to run the keyboard troubleshooter:
1. Press the Win + I keys on the keyboard to launch Windows Settings.
2. Select System and scroll down.
3. Click the Troubleshoot option.
. Select Other troubleshooters.
5. Locate the Keyboard option and click Run.
The keyboard troubleshooter will be launched. Let it do its work, and hopefully, you will be able to use the backspace key again after it’s done.
4. Update or Uninstall the Keyboard Driver
If it is a driver-related issue, you need to fix it. Either you are using an outdated keyboard driver, or it got corrupted. If that happens, the connection between the OS and the keyboard will weaken, resulting in the backspace problem. We recommend updating the driver with the help of the below steps.
1. Press the Win + R keys on the keyboard.
2. Type devmgmt.msc in the dialogue box.
3. Hit Enter or click OK.
4. In the Device Manager window, click the Keyboards option.
5. Right-click the keyboard driver and select the Update driver option from the drop menu.
6. That drop menu also has the Uninstall Device option, followed by Uninstall to remove the keyboard driver.
7. After that, restart the computer, and the driver will be installed automatically, fixing the backspace issue.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
