HP 15-dc1004nq
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Good evening HP community. I own a HP Omen laptop which I bought in August 2019. It’s an HP Omen-dc1004nq which has i7-8750H, 16 gb ram, RTX 2060, 1 TB HDD + 128 GB SSD. I have been really satisfied with it until lately when some issues with my HDD started to happen. Basically, the issue is that I have lag spikes/frame drops for 1-2 seconds on almost any game if I install it on my HDD. The games work perfect in terms of FPS in general, but when I play its annoying because sometimes it happen to have lag spikes (screen freezez for just 1 second) and then works again. This doesn’t happen if I i install the games on my SSD though. The problem is that my SSD has only 128 Gb so its not enough for the OS and games.

I ran several Hardware tests including the one from Hardware Diagnostics UEFI and it says everything is good. The life of my HDD is 100% as I checked earlier, so what can cause this issue? Every driver is up to date and so on, its most likely a HDD issue since I dont have this problem on SSD?

Welcome to the HP support community.

There are many ways to increase FPS and system performance:

  • Update the BIOS.

For notebook PCs, go to HP Notebook PCs - Updating the BIOS

  • Update the graphics driver.

Go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, enter your PC model, then select the driver for your graphics card.

  • Most games allow you to change the graphics settings. Using a lower graphic quality often improves FPS.

  • Close any applications or programs that are not being used.

  • Turn on Game Mode. Game Mode is a new feature in Windows 10 Creators Update that improves gaming performance by limiting background processes and programs from using system resources while a game is running.

I hope that helps.

Hello there. Thank you for reaching out to me. I have several questions to ask you:

1. I am not looking to improve my FPS. I am looking to repair my HDD as I have frame drops while playing (like I said this doesnt happen on SSD).

2. When I install Windows Updates, the drivers that get installed, arent all of them from HP drivers page from your site? Or do I have to download each of them manually from internet.

3. Should I keep the laptop on “Better Performance” or “Best Performance”? And which mode should I use in Omen Command Center? Default or Performance?

@VictorMihai12 Let's see if I can address all your concerns one after the other:

#1 - To identify if the HDD really requires a repair, Install the latest version of the HP Hardware diagnostics (UEFI) on your device using this link: Click here for details

  • Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
  • Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
  • On the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu, click System Tests.
  • Click Extensive Test.
  • Click Run once, or Loop until error.
  • While the test is running, the time remaining and test result for each component display on the screen.

If a component fails a test, write down the failure ID (24-digit code) for when you respond back to us.

#2 - Windows Updates install all necessary updates automatically, if not, you can go to the HP website and install it: click here

#3 - Better Performance should be sufficient and Default on Omen Command Center should be fine, in my opinion.

Keep us posted,
