Hi. My laptop currently has a 256 GB PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 SSD and I was hoping to expand to 500GB+
Looking inside my machine though, I can see there's an empty bay for a normal SSD, although there is no obvious way to connect it to the motherboard. There does seem to be an unused connector for a ribbon nearby though, which I've highligted below with a red circle. Can anyone tell me if this is how an SSD could be connected and if so, the name/type? Also, is there any particular spec of SSD that is needed for this machine or will anything off the peg be ok?

Hi Andy
Please take a look at page 25 of HP Pavilion 14 Laptop PC - Maintenance and Service Guide
Any 2.5" 7mm (height) HDD or SSD will work. You will need to procure the following items:
(3) Hard drive brackets L19469-001
(4) Hard drive cable L19172-001
These items may not be available for purchase on HP parts store
I bought similar cable and bumper (different part number) for my 14" laptop off eBay. Working well.
Hope this helps.

Hi Brian
Many thanks for your help - much appreciated.
I've tried sourcing those specific parts on HP & eBay but they're either not available or only from overseas and really expensive. I've found another cable that may do the job, but it's a different part number
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/323283424163?ul_noapp=true
You said the parts you sourced had different numbers; were these for a different machine, or are these parts more generic and as long as they fit, they should work?
Cheers,

Mine's for a different machine (bought in December 2018). I got from eBay the exact part number as listed in my Support Guide, as they are No Longer Available in HP parts store.
Edit: This is what I got L23187-001
I don't know the pin-out spec for the disk drive connector, not sure if they are the same for different cables. May be other experts can help you there. Try starting a new thread.
Edit: I tried this site, http://partsurfer.hp.com/ no stock as well.

Hey everyone, I had the exact same issue! It's such a shame that HP have decided to discontinue both parts! I love my laptop! Anyways, I would just like to say that I found a compatible part that works without any issues.
This is the part I purchased: HP Envy 15-J 17-J 14-CE HDD Hard Drive Cable Connector 723379-001 6017B0416801
Here's a video of the upgrade: https://youtu.be/K7OLU40J8Os
Hopefully this helps anyone that has faced a similar situation!
